Looking down onto a brook that is quite low due to lack of rain. The left ¼ is in shadow with small dark rocks in the sandy bottom. The right ¾ is in sun and green leaves, blue sky, and white clouds are reflected on the shallow surface. There are also dozens of newly fallen, golden yellow birch leaves floating. Much of the brook bottom is covered with rocks and boulders that are higher than the water surface, making it easier to step out into the middle of the brook… even in one’s slippers.

Looking downstream at a brook in the woods. The lack of rain has shrunk the level and width of the water. Where water was just a few months ago, piles of unmoving leaves now connect the embankment to the pooled, slowly moving water. The sun is just above the top of the frame straight ahead, lighting up sections of the brook almost giving it a sparkly appearance.

Europe’s tallest and most perfectly shaped earth pyramids are to be found on the Renon mountain. Those pictured here are in the gorge of the Finsterbach creek between Longomoso and Monte di Mezzo, South Tirol, Italy.

Earth pyramids consist of cone-shaped pillars formed by deposited clay and a boulder on top - they often form rather bizarre shapes, and tend to be shrouded in mystery. But there is an explanation for their existence. Earth pillars started forming from moraine clay soil left behind after the last Ice Age when the glaciers of the Valle d'Isarco covering the valley melted away. In dry condition the soil is hard as stone, but, as soon as it rains, it turns into a soft muddy mass, starts sliding, and so forms 10 to 15-meter-steep slopes. Through additional rainfall, these slopes will erode. However, where there are rocks in the muddy mass, the clay soil underneath these rocks stays protected from the rain. So, while the surrounding material is continually carried off with the weather, the protected pillars literally rise out of the ground to form majestic earth pyramids.

The image depicts a rugged earthen formation characterized by sharp, towering spires of earth, partially covered by green and autumn-colored trees. Some large boulders rest atop the spires, enhancing the dramatic landscape.

r.i.p. brat summer

Here we have a photograph taken on my walk yesterday in San Francisco. It’s a Halloween scene featuring many spooky characters and plants. In the center there is a bright neon-green grave stone with the words “r.i.p. brat summer” designed to look like the Charli XCX album. Next to the grave is a statue of a winged angel weeping, face-in-hands alongside a small skeleton cat. In front of that is a partially exposed skeleton lazily relaxing in the dead grasses. In the background is a skeleton bird resting on a gnarled branch of a half-dead tree.

It is a photograph of a bit of street art in the form of a blue square of ceramic tile mounted on an off- white painted cement wall under some rather strong nighttime lighting, made clear by the stark shadows. On the edges of the photo are glimpses of traditional graffiti in red and black spray paint. On the tile is written “EU ME PERDOO” which means I FORGIVE MYSELF. It is signed in the lower right corner. Above the tile, in green marker written directly on the wall are the words “EU NÃO! ❤️” (I don’t! ❤️) There are other words above that in the same hand, but we aren’t able to see the whole of their phrasing.

Interesting perhaps only to me, but with the Orthographic Reform submitted to in 2009, the correct spelling of PERDOO is no longer PERDÔO. This gives me the impression the author of this particular bit of street art is young enough to have learned this in school, because PERDOO looks so very wrong to me. I suppose there’s only so much reform one can internalise (RIP trema/umlaut 1943-1990, gone but not forgotten).
