Howdy to Mastodon! I'm still wrapping my head around things here but figured I'd go ahead and do an #introduction.

I'm a #landscape and #nature #photographer based out of Fort Worth, #Texas which means, aside from my local park, I do a LOT of driving for #photography, especially to #utah and the desert southwest.

Rare ice formations on rotting wood, called Hair ice.

“How does hair ice form?

The conditions required for the formation of hair ice are extremely specific, hence the relative scarcity of sightings. To form, moist rotting wood from a broadleaf tree is required with the presence of moist air and a temperature slightly below 0 °C. It is generally confined to latitudes between 45°N and 55°N.

In 2015 the scientists Hofmann, Mätzler and Preuß determined the exact cause of the hair ice phenomenon, linking its formation to the presence of a specific fungus called Exidiopsis effusa.

They discovered that the presence of the fungus led to a process called 'ice segregation'. When water present in the wood freezes it creates a barrier that traps liquid between the ice and the pores of the wood. This creates a suction force which pushes water out of the pores to the edge of the ice surface where it freezes and extends outwards. As this repeats it pushes a thin 'hair' of ice out of the wood which is around 0.01 mm in diameter.”

An austere-looking Stratford City Hall in the depths of winter, the red and white Maple Leaf flying high in a freezing gale serving up snow squalls off Lake Huron. This image is called Light in the Dark. It was taken after 'fog hunting' in #tasmania. and driving the backroads to get back to #hobart. I had noticed that the sun was piercing through plantation forest so I hopped out to see what I could find.

It took me a couple of years to release this image but it's since become a firm favorite. A gallery visitor described it as being the hope that no matter how dark life gets, that there will always be light.

Para entonces ya tenía 4 años perfeccionando mi propio laboratorio. Sur de Manhattan, NYC, cerca del distrito financiero. Le puse Minos.
