The Fighting Temeraire. 1839, by Joseph Mallord William Turner.

The painting shows the once-mighty warship HMS Temeraire, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, being towed by a small, blackened steam-powered tugboat up the River Thames to be broken up. The contrast between the two vessels is stark and symbolic — the proud, ghostly white sailing ship looms large and elegant, while the tugboat is squat, dirty, and puffing out thick smoke.

The Temeraire is placed off-center to the left, bathed in the golden glow of the sunset. The tugboat pulls it from the right, emphasizing movement and inevitable transition.

Turner’s masterful use of light dominates the scene. The setting sun floods the sky with rich hues of orange, gold, and pink, blending into cool blues and purples of the encroaching night.
