Encerrando a década passada e popularizando um estilo de som mais energético e agressivo que iria se tornar uma influência para diversos estilos musicais que surgiram durante os anos 70 e além, o MC5 é uma banda seminal que, retroativamente, e junto dos Stooges, recebeu o rótulo de protopunk.

Altamente influenciados pelas políticas da época, como o marxismo dos Panteras Negras, provocavam a sociedade e as autoridades dentro e fora dos palcos com sua postura "anti-stabilishment".

Apesar de encerrar sua arividade com um show de despedida em 72, seus membros se mantiveram ativos em outros projetos, voltando recentemente em 2018 para uma turnê de celebração de 50 anos da banda, e tocando até este ano, com o falecimento dos últimos de seus membros originais (A história é mais complexa do que isso, mas esse é um bom resumo).
