Went out to feed the birds this a.m. & saw something "mounted" to a back porch support beam. Closer inspection revealed it was a very large #moth. My ID app suggests Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) with an average wingspan of 6". It was just chilling during the a.m. storms. I hoped it would open up but it just stayed motionless. It was quite dark so the pics aren't the best. Antennae are very cool!

And I want to create a #WoodMeadow in #Wales.

For research, I’m going to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological Restoration this August in #Estonia, where the wood meadows are the most biodiverse sites in the world.

Hey friends! We just came back from a great hike near #garmischpartenkirchen. We wanted to do this mountain recently but the snow in the upper part was too risky for us.

Today we went there again. Beautiful ascent, nice views. Some spray rain and a slippery, dirty descent. But at the end we even had some sun!

Now we feel tired and a bit sore 😉

Blue Dasher #dragonfly on a Red Yucca flower spike in our front #garden yesterday evening. Last year dragonfly sightings/photo ops at the house were very few and far between so I’m hoping this is a sign of better luck this year.

These wonderful little Q-tip sprouty things are Swamp Beacon [Mitrula elegans] mushrooms, and up until yesterday I had never found one. In fact they aren’t listed in many of my guides or fungi websites I visit. They mostly grow on fallen conifer needles IN BOGS… so you can see why they don’t get a lot of press!

Each is about 2 inches high. The top of the bog has a glass or ice appearance with dark mounds where the mushrooms come up.

Last year, we learned our porcupines do not like getting their paws wet. So my wife built them a little stone bridge to cross the 1 inch deep trench 🥹 They seem to have mastered it! Anything to not get wet. Even if they’re already soaked from the pouring rain…

Aurora colors come from atoms that are trying to shed some of their energy.

In very thin air, oxygen survives in a delicate, high-energy state that emits green light. In denser air, atomic collisions knock oxygen to a lower-energy state that emits red. Nitrogen is a robust emitter that glows bright in even lower, denser layers of the atmosphere.

Just at Civil twilight the Aurora Start to show up in my Southern and Northern Sky, despite the partially blue sky and waxing crescent Moonlight, it was amazing and I captured it from my Observatories in Yellow Springs, Ohio on Friday evening until around 12:30am when clouds rolled in to cover the Awesome display.

The path I am walking along as I take this photo is beside a stormwater drain. It's been closed since early January and reopened yesterday. I am grateful for the opportunity to walk here again. I hear birds and leaves. I can see the last of the autumn leaves nearly ready to fall. My dog Sky is also enjoying reaquainting herself with the walkway. Today's sky is blue and cloudless. Ther is short green grass on both edges of the path.
