We were witnessing a historic, dazzling auroral display on May 10th, 2024 at Lake Sammamish in Redmond, Washington, where the Northern Lights captivated and mesmerized the onlookers with their vivid colors and fast moving formations.
The dancing ribbons of light surrounded, enveloped us with vibrant colors, sometimes radiating directly overhead where the Big Dipper’s seven bright stars aligned with the Coronae (Corona Borealis or crown), a rare event, indeed.
The Corona is the most impressive type of aurora, when rays or rayed bands pass overhead to converge to a point to form a crown or corona. So we looked overhead and the aurora rays appeared to originate from one single point and radiated outwards, in alignment with Big Dipper.
Words escape me to describe how mind-blowing was this otherworldly, once in a lifetime experience, to witness the vivid display of the aurora borealis as the lights filled the night sky with swirls of purple and blue hues.
The natural phenomenon created an ethereal atmosphere, conveying the beauty of Earth's geomagnetic interactions with solar particles.

Smurfs Log: Lucky

* Not only was I lucky enough to see a stoat up close today (see previous post), but this afternoon I finally found some of those tiny, fluffy, woolly creatures other people have been spotting. This one was kind enough to bring her two little lambs with her, too.

Ring a Ring o'Roses.

Three carp dance in a triangle almost breaking the surface of a glass-like pond. Their crimson and white markings contrast with the monochrome silken depths. Stellar Jay

This image was captured in Yosemite Valley as he was flying around keeping an eye on what appeared to be his mate, a much heavier bird that appeared to be carrying a number of eggs in her. They seemed to be on a nest building mission with the female doing most of the work.
These birds have become accustomed to humans flying around cleaning up campsites. I've actually had one land on my finger.

A Stellar Jay fills the frame with a presence that feels both alert and regal. The transition isn’t abrupt—it feels like watching dusk melt into night, a soft gradient of shadowed color.

The bird’s eye is a glossy, liquid black, catching a pinpoint of light that makes it look sharp, curious, and fully aware of you. There’s an intensity to its gaze, the kind of look a wild creature gives when it’s deciding whether you’re a threat, a source of food, or simply part of the scenery.

My birdbath garden at mom's old cottage. Bumblebees loved the globe thistle, fritillary butterflies swarmed the coneflowers, and the red bee-balm was guaranteed to draw ruby-throat hummingbirds. There's a serviceberry tree to the left of the glider and a witch hazel tree in the border behind it. A mail-order ginseng plant liked this location and reseeded itself. Photo by my mom.
