squeezing in one last decembird with this loquacious lad, gary nubird. the starling is rarer & rarer in scotland; so, sadly, i've never had the distinct honour of hearing one bust out a classic electro riff. i'll bet they do it all the time, though, with their little customised roland tr-808s.

Time for a new #introduction!

I live on the border, where #Arizona, #Mexico and #NewMexico all come together.

I mostly post about #cooking, #gardening, #hiking and #publiclands

I'm interested in #music, #art, #anime, #manga, #comics, #math, #videogames, #retrogaming and #retrocomputing

I switched from #Amiga to #linux and #bsd so I actually know very little about MS Windows.

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born #OTD in 1840.

Some of his most famous works include the ballets Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, & Sleeping Beauty; his operas such as Eugene Onegin & The Queen of Spades; & his symphonies, particularly the 4th, 5th, & the 6th, known as the "Pathétique". His "1812 Overture", written to commemorate Russia's defense against Napoleon's Grande Armée in 1812, is also incredibly popular.

On this day in 1915, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the "original soul sister" and "Godmother of rock and roll" was born.

"Rock 'n' roll was bred between the church and the nightclubs in the soul of a queer black woman in the 1940s named Sister Rosetta Tharpe."

French composer and pianist Erik Satie was born #OTD in 1866.

In the 1880s he began composing works, mostly for solo piano, such as his Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes. He is known for his unconventional and innovative approach to music. He is often considered a precursor to movements such as minimalism, surrealism, and the avant-garde. Satie's work was influential to many 20th-century composers, including Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

Some insights and stories from Gary Numan that I've not heard before https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002js3b

“musical legend Gary Numan opens up about being autistic and how he interacts with the world differently. For Gary, music isn’t something he listens to for comfort or relaxation, writing music is a tool to cope with the world. He reflects on the intensity of his creative process and the role obsession plays in shaping both his music and his perspective, revealing how his neurodivergence is a gift, not a disorder. Alongside deeply personal stories, Gary shares a selection of music from the early days when he was obsessed with music to now being obsessed with certain songs”

Three parts:
1. the role of obsession in his music and life
2. on how he expresses his emotions
3. on being misunderstood

Behold the return of #ThePlaylist, with the theme this week of:

Behind

And, well, obviously most of the songs are about butts. We should have anticipated this. So yeah, kick back, relax, and enjoy two hours of fine, artisanal songs about arses.

(though not *entirely* about arses)

The song ‘Born in the USA’ has been used in iconic – and ironic – ways.

An example is in 1984, when Ronald Reagan used the song in his reelection and announced that Bruce Springsteen and him shared the same American dream. The Boss vehemently disagreed.

Oooh it’s time to share my year in music 2025, joyfully generated with @ListenBrainz!

I am not as satisfied with it as I was in previous years, but the wild range of genres and artists truly reflects the diversity of my listens. I love it.

I am most proud of C.U.R.A. by Dietro L’Angolo, a local rap collective from La Pigna, Sanremo, appearing there. They are my friends and I have been listening to them endlessly since they performed at @scambi in August 2025. I am also the one who added their album to @musicbrainz 😉
