A dozen shelf mushrooms, ranging in size from 5-10 inches and an inch high, grow from the bottom of a dead hemlock. The mushrooms are quite fresh. Their colors bright and glistening. The inner attachment to the bark of the tree are a deep brown/red, transitioning to yellow and then to a creamy white at the edges. In most of the mushrooms the edges are somewhat billowy at the edges and more sunken toward the tree.

I have a mushroom-obsessed friend who got me growing pink oysters in plastic buckets this summer. I decided to make her a mini mushroom pot out of clay and this is how it turned out. I put my hand in the pic so you could sense the scale.

You basically mix a neutral substrate like straw with mushroom spawn, wet it, and the #mushrooms eventually sprout through the small holes. I can’t wait to see this little pot with mushrooms sprouting all over it.

I picked up this twig with a mushroom growing on it today, and some guy coming along the trail said, "That is awesome! Is there a smaller one next to it, too?" I looked closer and saw the smaller one. I hadn't noticed it in my own hand, and this guy had spotted it from 3-4 meters away. He must be a good hiking companion. Second photo for scale with a bit of my finger.

A twig held up in the sunshine, with a small mushroom and a minuscule mushroom growing on the side. They have narrow stems and wide thin caps, brown on top and beige on the underside.

Now we're cooking with gas! A 5km walk netted many chanterelles (Cantharellus flavolateritius)(haven't weighed them yet), some fresh dryad's saddle (Cerioporus squamosus), two old men of the woods (Strobilomyces strobilaceus), a black velvet bolete (Tylopilus alboater) and some white-pored chicken of the woods (Laetiporus cincinnatus.) A countertop is laden with mushrooms. Two large bowls are piled with chanterelles, which are irregular trumpet-fan-shaped mushrooms of a peachy yellow color. Two large lobes of dryad's saddle lay on the table, cream white with a radiating pattern of brown scales. Two meaty cap-and-stem mushrooms that appear to be covered in tufts of black hair are old man of the woods. They are next to the black velvet bolete, a small lumpy velvety black mushroom. Finally, a pile of white-pored chicken of the woods are spread out. They are softly lobed rounded fan shapes that are covered in tiny white pores on one side and radiating soft orange and peach zones on the other.

I photographed these turkeytail mushrooms growing on an old branch that had fallen about 50 feet from my house. It really is true that there are photographic subjects in your own backyard.
