Ground level view of a small embankment of bright green moss growing in the forest floor with dried leaves in the foreground. Poking out of various spots in the moss are 7 bright orange/yellow mushrooms. They are umbrella shaped with bright caps with a slightly more pale border. The stems are mostly the same size as the borders and their bottoms disappear into the wall of moss at varying angles. One of the mushrooms has aged to the point that its cap is exposing the gills on its underside.

With the poison ivy leaves out of the way, I was able to get back to the Varnish Shelf mushrooms to log a final photo of this year’s life cycle.

This photo was taken 5 ½ months after the initial photo in this series. It shows the trunk of a hemlock tree with 6 plate like mushrooms growing out of the bark, some at eye level, some knee and ankle level. They are dark maroon and tan, cracked and slightly droopy, their attachment points weakened on the tree. At the base of the tree are autumn leaves and bright green moss.

A rotting tree stump is in the woods, the ground covered with green winding plants and fallen leaves. Growing out of a panel of sheared off bark is a yellowish tan oval mushroom. It is about two inches high and is covered in brown wartlike attachments to its outer skin.

In mid-October, I took my ridiculous 4mm fisheye lens out to the forest.

It's honestly not bad for photographing mushrooms – uniquely enabling you to get both the mushroom and the rest of the forest in frame at the same time. And it's always fun to experiment.
