What to try #linux? Ask around, specially friends, what distro to try. Download a live CD and try it that way. If you have old HW sitting around, try installing there first. If not, try dual booting. Test the waters before you jump. If you get into any trouble, seek help from the distro's community; many have "instant chat" like IRC or others. Mastodon is possible, but it's slower because of the async'ty and pasting config files is awkward. Good luck!

Okay this is wild: I just noticed that changing 'PasswordAuthentication' to 'no' in /etc/ssh/sshd_config is no longer enough to disable password authentication in #ubuntu. That's because Ubuntu Server now by default creates a sshd_config.d/50-cloud-init.conf file which contains 'PasswordAuthentication yes' which takes priority over sshd_config.
I would've unknowingly left password auth on if I hadn't double checked.

We're early in the reporting process, but if vetted and true, it's hard to take the news that Facebook has labeled #Linux a "cybersecurity threat" (and is banning mentions of it) as anything other than implicit confirmation that Microsoft and Apple are thoroughly compromised.
I mean, we knew this, but every time they say the quiet part out loud, the better I feel about both moving to the #fediverse, and abandoning proprietary software whenever possible.

I keep suggesting to try #Linux via live CDs before switching, so you can find out whether it works for you. But I just realize that you can also run it one a VM.
So, install VirtualBox and install it there. It will also allow you to make sure you can install it yourself.
Just remember, just like live CD, it's not the same experience as when you're running it natively.
What command do you prefer for switching to root?
Edit: I realize now that I forgot a looot of options. So many ways to switch to a root shell. If only I could add more options to a mastodon poll in an edit...
