Finally got a chance to try cider, and it's better than apple's music app to listen to apple music

Running the live environment of the latest release of #Linux #Mint 7 #LMDE on my trusty old #Lenovo #M72E and it's just.. working. This tiny thin client with a CPU from 2013 and a whopping 8GB of RAM (I've got RAM, get me!) is just happily running a modern 64-bit environment.

Of course I'm sure that browsing the web, especially with multiple tabs open and in-memory, will quickly push it to/over its limits, but likewise, with some smart software choices and a more focused mindset, this could totally work fine for various use-cases.

My use-case is primarily that I'm running Windows XP (which it natively supports, yay for me!) on it as a light-weight setup that gets me to enjoy the last good version of Windows. Some say it's 7. I'd probably have to reluctantly agree on technical levels, but XP is where it's at for me. This, in part, because XP was also the last version of Windows I actively used, before switching fully to OS X — and Linux after that, of course.

I'm in the live environment as I wanted to dd the SSD with the current XP-and-7 installation before making some changes to it. It's easier to do that within Linux, but also because just wanted to see how Mint feels on this hardware. I left enough space on the internal SSD available, thinking I might actually want to put Linux on there too.

It's certainly lovely to see such a modern OS running on such "outdated" hardware. Maybe especially so because it's connected to a CRT monitor 😄.

update-notifier-crash on Ubuntu 24.04 wrote 1 Tbyte of garbage to syslog before I noticed and stopped it. I noticed because it filled the disk.

Unbelievably annoying behavior. I guess that'll teach me to ignore an update notification rather than figuring out how to disable it forever.

Switched to strawberry from Swinsian to manage my iPod.

Overall I like swinsian’s interface better, but strawberry is a great player!

Either way I was already using my library to mpd so that doesn’t really hit my day to day.

Linus Torvalds has repeatedly said that LLMs are "clearly useful" and "just a tool" and that the kernel maintainers will use LLMs for Linux development.

He fails to acknowledge that LLMs are based entirely on the theft of intellectual property and that they are destroying our habitat and the future of our species as a whole.

I find this extremely frustrating, coming not just from some random tech bro but the man who controls arguably one of the most important pieces of software in the world.

No kidding, I have been using the #SoftMaker Office NX for more than a year under an annual subscription license on my #Debian laptop that I use for both work and personal use. I use it almost every day and it has been great experience, by far the best office suit based on my desktop #Linux experience for over 10 years. Until recently, in their 4501 version where they announce to add #AI feature, I started to get TONS of crashes, multiples times almost daily! I am annoyed, and sad...

I had to replace #FreeBSD with #Linux on my old laptop at home serving as a streaming server for movies mainly. The only reason is low internet speed. The laptop came with an Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 Plus Bluetooth wireless card, both the iwn and iwlwifi successfully bring it up and connect. However, neither driver worked well enough to achieve as fast as 1M/s speen when downloading large files. After installing #Debian downloading speed easily goes up to as 2M/s when downlading the same large files.
