Found a glorious wildflower field near Chappell field in #BlueKnobStatePark, #Pavia, #PA, a few weeks back. I wandered around in there with the camera and felt like I'd gone to heaven!!! Found this sweet Great Spangled Fritillary who was kind enough to pose for me for a while!

Butterflies in our garden here in West Virginia are much fewer than what I was used to in Maryland. Of course that could be because our gardens there were larger, but even at that, we tried hard to plant butterfly-loving flowers and shrubs when we moved in. The year 2022 wasn't bad for our little winged friends, but our buggy visitors were pretty scarce in 2023 and especially 2024. I was a little worried, and very disappointed, but I'm happy to say that this year, 2025, was a big improvement. We've seen a pretty good return of the butterflies and moths and skippers this year. I captured this guy on a sunny morning in July of 2022 chowing down on a giant Joe Pie Weed that we planted just for him. ☺️

In case anyone’s not too sure.. this is what a 'spring lawn' is supposed to look like.

Breakdown:

• No irritating lawn-mower lines.
• A multitude of flowers.
• Lawn-mower rests, unperturbed in garden shed.
• No Louis X1V - 'rules over nature'.
• No walking up and down for hours, making a really annoying, loud noise and irritating the neighbours.

• Just peace, quiet and LOTS of bees.

An Agreeable Tiger Moth [Spilosoma congrua] doing its best bat impression in the slats of my deck.

It has small antennae that are somewhat striped looking, black and white. There are 2 or 3 visible tiny black spots on its outer wing. The gap between the two planks is only ¼ inch.

Got this shot out in west Texas a couple days ago. It’s a Pogonomyrmex harvester ant sprinting across a sand dune carrying one of her nestmate sisters. The carried ant curls into a stereotypical pupal position to be easier to transport.

For those who know anything about ants, here's a weird one: Lasius xerophilus.

Most Lasius species live in north temperate/boreal forests. This one? Sand dunes in North American deserts. A total oddball, and unexpected, living alongside classic desert species like Pogonomyrmex harvester ants.
