Got this shot out in west Texas a couple days ago. It’s a Pogonomyrmex harvester ant sprinting across a sand dune carrying one of her nestmate sisters. The carried ant curls into a stereotypical pupal position to be easier to transport.

For those who know anything about ants, here's a weird one: Lasius xerophilus.

Most Lasius species live in north temperate/boreal forests. This one? Sand dunes in North American deserts. A total oddball, and unexpected, living alongside classic desert species like Pogonomyrmex harvester ants.

Queen ant update!

Her brood pile is the same size as her body almost. She has five larvae in silk pupae ready to grow up to be nanitics (in about two weeks)

She’s doing great living in the fountain pen drawer. #antqueen #ants #antkeeping #camponotus #nycants

This is the sighting map for Lasius emarginatus. It's become rather famous in NYC, and I've observed it many times this spring. Based on the articles I've read, Lasius emarginatus is not found in cities in Europe and tends to live in trees in the forest? Is this true? Have any of ya'll over there seen this ant?

Also, I'm not buying that this ant hasn't made it to any other US cities. I will explain how to spot it and identify it.

If you have been thinking "the fediverse is too ---" There are too many people posting about --- and not enough ----." Remember that pruning and planting your feed is your responsibility. Adjust who you follow. Add more hash tags about important topics such as #ants

There isn't any program spying on what you stare at longer trying to hack your brain keep you scrolling for as long as possible.

There have been a lot of new people. You could be missing fun posts and looking at boring ones.
