I find this remarkable:

The Dresden Codex, one of the few surviving Mayan manuscripts, contains tables that give highly accurate timings of solar eclipses over more than 700 years, from 350 CE to the 12 century.

- a damaged copy of Positive Tipping Points: How to Fix the Climate Crisis
- a second-hand copy of the 1982 classic Lamarck the Mythical Precursor: A Study of the Relations Between Science and Ideology published by @themitpress (there aren't that many books on Lamarck)
- a former library copy of The Environmental Consequences of War: Legal, Economic and Scientific Perspectives. This one came from the holdings of the JSCSC (Joint Services Command and Staff College)'s Hobson Library, one of the UK's largest military libraries (!), probably the most unusual provenance for any of the books I have.

A black hole is a bottomless pit in the fabric of space-time into which stuff, including light, plummets, never to be seen again.

The term paints so vivid an image that it has entered everyday language, and we commonly talk of losing this or that “down a black hole”.

Ironically, such a metaphorical black hole has swallowed up the name of the woman who co-discovered these celestial objects: Louise Webster.

Trump adopted anti-mask/anti-vax politics bc the first wave of COVID *decimated* Democrat constituencies. R instincts went rabidly anti-mask/anti-vax fast and wet-dreamy. Dems? Masked up and vaxxed! Uh oh, more dead Republicans by 2024! Both parties embraced death, one won. Biden isn't any less ghoulish than #Trump.

#OnThisDay, 11 Nov 1865, Dr Mary Edwards Walker receives the Medal of Honor from US President Andrew Johnson for her services as a field surgeon in the American Civil War.

A lifelong "dress reformer", she wore trousers under short dresses and eventually switched to trousers and jackets. She was frequently arrested for her choice. "I don't wear men's clothes, I wear my own clothes," she said.

#OnThisDay, 13 Nov 1931, Democrat Hattie Wyatt Caraway is appointed as a US Senator for Arkansas.

The first woman to sit in the Senate for more than a day, she'd been selected by the party on the understanding that she would serve out her late husband's term and not stand for re-election in 1932.

Instead she stood again, and remained a Senator until 1945.

Earhart records a series of first flights by a woman, before disappearing during an attempt to fly around the world in 1937.

Outlaw, fiddler, & folk hero James Macpherson (c.1675–1700) was hanged #OTD, 16 November, for being Romani. Prior to his execution Macpherson composed his famous “Rant”. Macpherson sang this lament on the gallows & smashed his fiddle before meeting his fate
