#art #history: every 28th october, i use elsa lanchester (born #otd in 1902) as an excuse to pay homage to mary wollstonecraft shelley's masterpiece, 'frankenstein'. mind you, elsa was pretty cool, herself. difficult not to be when you're the daughter of a suffragette who was also secretary to eleanor marx.

#art #history: i promised myself that this year would be the one during which i paid tribute to the revolutionary, frida kahlo (born #otd in 1907), & then i was too busy to do her any sort of justice. not only have i rushed her portrait, but i've also had no time to write up the sort of blurb that she merits. she was a death-defying, genre-spanning communist powerhouse & diego was punching waaaaaaaay up. :)

#OnThisDay, 5 Nov 1872, suffragists Susan B Anthony and 13 other women illegally vote in the US Presidential election.

Anthony is subsequently arrested and put on trial. She is found guilty, but refuses to pay the fine. The judge decides not to jail her.

Nine of the voters were initially reported as a "minor topic".

This year has felt like nonstop #news, with significant events coming on a weekly or even daily basis. But it's not unique in #history.

For example, there was 1940: War, the draft and FDR’s historic reelection.

1968: Assassinations, political turmoil and more war.

1973 had legal abortion, a historic peace deal, Watergate and plenty of political mayhem.

"Bright as lightning shoots the fire from the top of the mountain and dips the smoky sky in a mystical light. Fire tones in ocher and orange set the scene. The painter is an experienced observer and connoisseur of the play of light. It makes the night-black sky shine and the sea a mirror of the heavenly happenings. Turner used a colored black to depict the dark elements of his watercolor. With admixtures of blue and green and an intense application of color, Turner achieves a contrast of light and dark. The mountain is at the center of the scene and is clearly depicted in detail. Atmosphere blurred in almost impressionistic colors, the landscape is captured.

The elaboration of the contrasts creates tension and shows the drama of the eruption of Vesuvius. Completely opposite is the representation of the observers at the bottom of the picture. Respect, but also peace and serenity radiate the figures who look at the bright sky by far. It looks like contemplating fireworks, free from the danger of burning hot lava and rock bombs.
