#OnThisDay, 5 Nov 1872, suffragists Susan B Anthony and 13 other women illegally vote in the US Presidential election.

Anthony is subsequently arrested and put on trial. She is found guilty, but refuses to pay the fine. The judge decides not to jail her.

Nine of the voters were initially reported as a "minor topic".

This year has felt like nonstop #news, with significant events coming on a weekly or even daily basis. But it's not unique in #history.

For example, there was 1940: War, the draft and FDR’s historic reelection.

1968: Assassinations, political turmoil and more war.

1973 had legal abortion, a historic peace deal, Watergate and plenty of political mayhem.

- a damaged copy of Positive Tipping Points: How to Fix the Climate Crisis
- a second-hand copy of the 1982 classic Lamarck the Mythical Precursor: A Study of the Relations Between Science and Ideology published by @themitpress (there aren't that many books on Lamarck)
- a former library copy of The Environmental Consequences of War: Legal, Economic and Scientific Perspectives. This one came from the holdings of the JSCSC (Joint Services Command and Staff College)'s Hobson Library, one of the UK's largest military libraries (!), probably the most unusual provenance for any of the books I have.

A black hole is a bottomless pit in the fabric of space-time into which stuff, including light, plummets, never to be seen again.

The term paints so vivid an image that it has entered everyday language, and we commonly talk of losing this or that “down a black hole”.

Ironically, such a metaphorical black hole has swallowed up the name of the woman who co-discovered these celestial objects: Louise Webster.

#OnThisDay, 11 Nov 1865, Dr Mary Edwards Walker receives the Medal of Honor from US President Andrew Johnson for her services as a field surgeon in the American Civil War.

A lifelong "dress reformer", she wore trousers under short dresses and eventually switched to trousers and jackets. She was frequently arrested for her choice. "I don't wear men's clothes, I wear my own clothes," she said.

#OnThisDay, 13 Nov 1931, Democrat Hattie Wyatt Caraway is appointed as a US Senator for Arkansas.

The first woman to sit in the Senate for more than a day, she'd been selected by the party on the understanding that she would serve out her late husband's term and not stand for re-election in 1932.

Instead she stood again, and remained a Senator until 1945.
