Yesterday's 12 mile hike included 6 miles on the shoulder of highway 101, but Strawberry Hill was on the way and was begging to be explored! I spent a good hour there watching the harbor seals and the pelicans. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

Was the tree lonely, standing all by itself on the hillside, with nary a tree friend beside it?

I don't think so. There was the grass, bushes growing amongst it, the distant forest, the surrounding hills, and all the small animals that stopped to take rest in the tree's shade.

There was always someone to talk to. And then there was that view . . .

It was . . . so silent.

The hike to reach this spot in the Oregon wilderness was long and winding, but every step was worth it when I found myself in a magical enclave.

The glow of light around the trees, the boulders looking as if they had been tossed by a giant child, the incredibly clear and crisp air -- all combined to create a place of silence, majesty, and peace.

Mist inspires silence.

Perhaps because it hides detail, blurs the sharpness of lines, de-focuses our view -- mist confuses us because it alters what we expect to see.

But it adds a touch of magic to the moment -- and it is, indeed, only a moment, because mist is temporary, transient, evanescent, ephemeral, something that we cannot grab and hold, grasp and hoard.

Oh, it was a broody day, that afternoon by Palouse Falls in Washington state.
