8 inches/20cm of heavy wet snow has blown in 3 days after the ski mountain closed for the year. The drifts were well over a foot deep in some places and I had do a bit of “fatbike cyclocross” to get to town.

Rock Crk. Canyon check-up run 2200-2350m run today showed quite a bit of melt over the last week. Not skiable until 3K in, where it is more wind sheltered/shaded. Snowpack was ripening, soft had to turn back just 5K in. Mild of course 7C but at least not windy, always a plus in here. Forecast modeling keeps trying to bring cold NW flow troughs in days 8+ over. Doing that since Oct., not sure why, so not hopeful. #climate #running #dogs #montana #gye

We discovered the Bleu Horses (not a spelling error) out near Three Forks, Montana yesterday. They're quite interesting sculptures, made by Jim Dolan, that have features that move in the wind. Manes and tails, obviously, from the photos... but also some of them will move their heads when the wind gusts! #photography #montana
East Rosebud Canyon trail aka "beaten path" used to be busiest trail in MT. 45K thru the glacially carved canyon, then up onto the Beartooth Plateau, ending near Cooke City. Slices S-SW thru highest terrain in MT. Ravaged by 13JUN2022 flood, 11K has been rebuilt from 1930m start, to washed out bridge 2400m Rimrock Lake. A young man died trying to cross the outlet 3 weeks ago, still has not been found. Perfect conditions 10-15C not too windy 👍🏽. #hiking #dogs #climate #montana #wilderness

It is possible forecast short hiking weather windows on Plateaus above 3000m. Using publically-available NWS Hi-Res forecast models. Usually give good timing for ⚡️ and precip. Had 2 hrs, 0930-1130 w just sprinkles to hike down from Line Crk. Trlhd Beartooth Plateau to 2900m pond, after checking melt on 3150m ice patch. Then got back up to 3200m for good SW view. TRW just as we got back, models did well 👍🏽.
