Most of the leaves are down on the ground by now, but a few trees are quite obstinate and refuse to denude themselves.

And while a blustery wind will manage to rip off most of what remains, a few leaves will implacably stick it out through all of winter and into spring.

I just really admire stubbornness.

There's no highway, no smooth road to drive over, just this winding dirt path that looks like it will take its time to get to the foothills of the mountain.

But the mountain is pleased by the road, because it doesn't want crowds of cars parked at its feet. I suppose that mountains, in their rocky way, value a bit of privacy now and then, just as we do.

Yesterday's 12 mile hike included 6 miles on the shoulder of highway 101, but Strawberry Hill was on the way and was begging to be explored! I spent a good hour there watching the harbor seals and the pelicans. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

Was the tree lonely, standing all by itself on the hillside, with nary a tree friend beside it?

I don't think so. There was the grass, bushes growing amongst it, the distant forest, the surrounding hills, and all the small animals that stopped to take rest in the tree's shade.

There was always someone to talk to. And then there was that view . . .
