You never know when you’re going to stumble into a Sarlacc pit… I mean, stumble upon a mushroom you’ve never found before.

Here’s Turbinellus kauffmanii (likely a species complex). No common name. But really, Sarlacc pit should be considered, right?

Top down view of a palm-sized mushroom cap that is tan, white and brown with a funnel structure that means there is a dark hole going downward in the center of the cap. Bordering the hole are jagged, toothy growths that give the mushroom cap a maw-like appearance. Similar to the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. You know, the thing that belches after swallowing Boba Fett.

Two funnel shaped mushrooms coming up from the forest floor. They are about four inches high, several inches wide, and are four inches apart from each other. The “stem” or underside of the mushroom is a wrinkled cream color texture. The inner part of the mushroom can be seen at the top, or opening is spotted with giraffe colors - tan and brown.

Ground level view of a small embankment of bright green moss growing in the forest floor with dried leaves in the foreground. Poking out of various spots in the moss are 7 bright orange/yellow mushrooms. They are umbrella shaped with bright caps with a slightly more pale border. The stems are mostly the same size as the borders and their bottoms disappear into the wall of moss at varying angles. One of the mushrooms has aged to the point that its cap is exposing the gills on its underside.

This photo was taken 5 ½ months after the initial photo in this series. It shows the trunk of a hemlock tree with 6 plate like mushrooms growing out of the bark, some at eye level, some knee and ankle level. They are dark maroon and tan, cracked and slightly droopy, their attachment points weakened on the tree. At the base of the tree are autumn leaves and bright green moss.

A rotting tree stump is in the woods, the ground covered with green winding plants and fallen leaves. Growing out of a panel of sheared off bark is a yellowish tan oval mushroom. It is about two inches high and is covered in brown wartlike attachments to its outer skin.

From a gray-brown decaying pine log arise about a dozen tan and cream-colored mushrooms. This is a close-up side view. Each has a short slender stalk that is topped with a fuzzy loop, not a cone. On the right, most of them are in a bunch. Some you can see the tops and there actually appears to be a loop that comes from the stalk at one point.

Behold this metal af mushroom that showed up in our yard! Last night it had the classic, domed mushroom shape. By morning it had turned into this!

How to describe this magnificent fungi. It sprouts up from the spiky, redwood leaf litter on a smooth, cream colored stalk - maybe 10-15cm tall (but what do I know as an American 🙄). What was last night a tall, domed cap the same color as the stem transformed overnight into a disk shape ringed with shiny, almost metallic black fronds that curl under. Other gray mushroom anatomy going on inside the ring.

Rare ice formations on rotting wood, called Hair ice.

“How does hair ice form?

The conditions required for the formation of hair ice are extremely specific, hence the relative scarcity of sightings. To form, moist rotting wood from a broadleaf tree is required with the presence of moist air and a temperature slightly below 0 °C. It is generally confined to latitudes between 45°N and 55°N.

In 2015 the scientists Hofmann, Mätzler and Preuß determined the exact cause of the hair ice phenomenon, linking its formation to the presence of a specific fungus called Exidiopsis effusa.

They discovered that the presence of the fungus led to a process called 'ice segregation'. When water present in the wood freezes it creates a barrier that traps liquid between the ice and the pores of the wood. This creates a suction force which pushes water out of the pores to the edge of the ice surface where it freezes and extends outwards. As this repeats it pushes a thin 'hair' of ice out of the wood which is around 0.01 mm in diameter.”
