Saw the first bees of the spring today. I don't think I've ever seen bees in February before, but it was 60F here and the species crocus were in full bloom.

Our #clematis vines are really taking off and starting to bloom. I planted them last year but they were very much underachievers, maybe because of our long hot summer, and after our one hard freeze this winter I thought they might be dead, but definitely not. This variety is called John Paul II 🤷‍♂️.

My ground phlox (possibly Phlox subulata/moss phlox) has achieved blanket status.

I'm a sucker for mass blooms. A friend of mine has large swaths of this phlox & was kind enough to borrow me a cup 2 yrs ago. A cup that was 1.5' x 2' chunk that I then plopped down in a 1.5' x 2' space.

Easy peasy phlox carpet squee-sy.

The flowers have five, heart-shaped, pale purple feathers that radiate from a narrow central cone. Each petal has two, small, purple dots where the bloom meets the central cone. Two orange anthers are visible in the center of the cone while the other reproductive organs are interior to the cone.

On the edge of the forest, a 3 petal wildflower is in bloom. The 3 petals are shiny red and tear shaped. They grow on pencil thick “stems” that emerge from 3 lettuce like “leaves”. This one is part of a mound that has 9 blooms.

People often think of California as nothing but desert. Let me change your mind. If that is true, than this is what the desert looks like after a rainy winter.
