Nie przesadzę, gdy stwierdzę, że przywołany wątek @nusquam_tuta_fides to obowiązkowa lektura, a następnie potrzeba świadomego działania i edukowania najbliższych—rodziny, bliższych i dalszych kręgów własnych znajomych. W myśl zasady „małą łyżeczką, nie chochlą”. I wcale nie trzeba być ekspertem, aby pomagać innym w zrozumieniu—każdy w swoim otoczeniu—że są alternatywne rozwiązania wobec technologii #bigtech i dlaczego sięganie po nie—staje się tak ważne i kluczowe.

Sam odnajduję sporo zbieżnych doświadczeń wskazywanych przez autora wątku—od historii Windowsa, przez Linuksa po macOS/iOS u mnie obecnie—i wiem, że edukowanie najbliższych o konieczności świadomych wyborów, z początku było wyzwaniem, ale z biegiem czasu przyniosło spodziewane efekty i poczucie satysfakcji z pozyskanego, obiegowego tytułu „domowego specjalisty ds. bezpieczeństwa cyfrowego” :)

Konsekwencja w działaniu—każdym—rodzi owoce.

Nie mam sporych zasięgów—jestem tu nowy—jednak włączam się do tematu i podaję dalej, a toota przypinam.

Next milestone achieved 🍾

Merged into @symfony core.

max_depth was counted per runtime class name. A Doctrine proxy is a subclass of the entity, so it got its own counter, and a graph with max_depth 1 serialized two levels deep instead of one.

The depth key now falls back to the parent class when the parent declares the same MaxDepth. Proxy and entity share one counter.

The issue was opened in October 2024. 685 days in the tracker before someone got to it.

Landed in 6.4 LTS, merged by nicolas-grekas, upmerges to 7.4 and 8.1 next.

We tried to respond to this #fediverse admin. They are unfortunately perpetuating the idea:

1. that we are an unmonitored bot account on an awful instance, just because we have auto posts from feeds,

2. that we are bad actors trying to harm the #fediverse and,

3. that we don't remove content that violates our server rules. Our volunteers respond nearly instantly.

While replying, the post was edited, then deleted, and we were blocked from reply.

Bad behavior indeed and not very neighborly.

Interesting to see the fediverse and the Atmosphere starting to take up similar shape, as with FASPs, fediverse servers will be able to connect to shared infrastructure.

I WILL NOT BE BULLIED 💎

I received a vicious reply today because I use AI. It wasn't a disagreement. Nor a criticism. It was a full-frontal personal attack! And I’ll admit it affected me more than I expected.

I USE AI MAINLY BECAUSE I'M PARALYSED.

Typing is physically difficult for me. I have the use of only one hand. So, tapping out a post or email with one finger is exhausting. Voice and AI help me turn my own thoughts into usable writing in a normal amount of time.

THAT SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A DEFENCE.

You can dislike AI. You can distrust it. You can argue about copyright concerns, energy and water use, labour, culture, or anything else that concerns you. I will listen to you and answer you.

But attacking people simply for using AI is not principled.

IT'S BULLYING.

And disabled people should not have to produce a medical justification every time they use a technology that makes their life easier.

AI is a tool. How it is used matters. Who gets harmed matters. Context matters. What does not help is turning “AI user” into a moral accusation and deciding that cruelty is suddenly acceptable.

I’m quite happy to discuss the technology with anyone.

HOWEVER, I WILL NOT BE BULLIED FOR USING IT.

I didn't need to do anything about the attack. Before I could even decide how to respond, both the post and the person disappeared from my notifications.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ONE MAN SHAPES GLOBAL SOCIAL MEDIA? 💎

I watched a ColdFusion video this morning about Meta’s growing legal problems. The numbers are completely absurd. Around 7,000 lawsuits. Another 100,000 arbitration proceedings. Billions have already been paid in fines and settlements by the company. But the money isn’t what caught my attention. Something more interesting is happening.

THE DESIGN ITSELF IS BEING PUT ON TRIAL.

For years we’ve argued about what people post on social media. Misinformation. Hate speech. Political extremism. Teen mental health. Moderation. Free speech. And underneath all that sits a machine whose job is remarkably simple:

KEEP THE USER ENGAGED.

The strange thing is that is exactly what drove me away.

I joined Meta's social networks to stay connected with friends. But over time, I could barely find them. The feed was filled with everything except the people I had come there to see. What I increasingly felt was not connection. It was isolation.

THE LONGER WE STAY, THE MORE ADVERTISING META CAN SELL.

And engagement algorithms discovered something rather inconvenient about human beings. Anger works. Fear works. Division works. Outrage works extremely well.

According to the video, Meta itself investigated whether maximising engagement was increasing political division. It found that it was. Possible changes were proposed, including exposing people to a wider range of viewpoints. But reducing division also reduced engagement.

AND GROWTH MATTERED.

That is the part I find difficult to get past. If a company makes more money when I remain angry, frightened, comparing myself with others and unable to stop scrolling, then my well-being and its business model are pulling in opposite directions.

Now, some of the lawsuits are going after the machinery itself: like counts, infinite scrolling, autoplay and recommendation algorithms. Not merely what is inside the cage.

BUT THE CAGE ITSELF!

Perhaps that is where this conversation should have been all along. Social media does not necessarily need to disappear. But maybe we need social spaces whose survival does not depend upon keeping human beings agitated enough to remain there.

That seems a rather more useful place to begin.
