<p>We're excited to share an update on <a href="/tags/fedify/" rel="tag">#Fedify</a>'s development! While we're actively working on Fedify 1.9 in the main branch, we've also begun preparations for Fedify 2.0 in the next branch.</p><p>Before you get too excited about revolutionary new features, we want to set clear expectations: Fedify 2.0 will primarily focus on cleaning up technical debt that we couldn't address due to backward compatibility constraints. This means removing deprecated APIs and making breaking changes that will ultimately result in a cleaner, more maintainable codebase. Think of it as a major housekeeping release—necessary work that will make Fedify better in the long run.</p><p>Some of the planned improvements include adding <a href="https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/issues/419" rel="nofollow">readonly modifiers throughout our types and interfaces</a> to better enforce our immutability-by-default principle, implementing our own <a href="https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/issues/418" rel="nofollow">RFC 6570 URI Template library</a> for symmetric expansion and pattern matching, and various <a href="https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/issues/414" rel="nofollow">CLI tool migrations</a> to our new <a href="https://optique.dev/" rel="nofollow">Optique</a> framework for better cross-runtime support. While the majority of changes will be about refinement rather than revolution, these updates will strengthen Fedify's foundation and improve interoperability across the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a>. You can track all planned changes in detail by checking out the <a href="https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/milestone/3" rel="nofollow">Fedify 2.0 milestone</a> on our GitHub repository.</p><p><a href="/tags/fedify2/" rel="tag">#Fedify2</a> <a href="/tags/fedidev/" rel="tag">#fedidev</a> <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a></p>
<p>Almost 4 years ago Mastodon, and by extension the Fediverse, became and continues to be essentially my sole social media platform.</p><p>A significant factor in this was when I discovered Pinafore and immediately fell in love. You know when you use software that just *feels* right, like Corel Paradox or Turbo Pascal and so on?</p><p>I was using Paradox daily at a former employer sixteen years after Corel ceased active development, and it could very well still be in use there today. Pinafore quickly became as vital for me as Paradox was for the more than eight years I worked there.</p><p>Unfortunately Pinafore's creator archived the project, but it lives on in various forks, of which I hopped from one to the next as each one eventually became archived, or dormant, or disappeared altogether (Anyone remember Mahoot?).</p><p>It's almost like the project is cursed, because I know of at least half a dozen Pinafore variants that all started out with great intentions and noticeable activity but eventually fell silent.</p><p>At least.. a year ago maybe? a bug was introduced somewhere along the line that caused buffers to hang if any posts fall under a "hide with warning" filter were found. Watching the spinning circle of dots endlessly loading, refreshing because *sometimes* that fixed things, as it triggered a BPD meltdown in me countless times.</p><p>Other issues or lacking vital new features (translation, editing a post, etc.) caused me to very reluctantly try other front-ends but I just couldn't deal with it. I even tried consciously *forcing* myself to use the other ones and despite the aforementioned buffering problem, I found Pinafore and its successors *less* maddening than these other interfaces. (No offense to the other front-ends; they're all amazing projects and work great for some people, but for whatever reasons they just don't work well for me.)</p><p>As I mentioned before, the Pinafore-style interface just fit my needs perfectly. So I just continued to be frustrated because I didn't have the knowledge/experience.</p><p>Yesterday, however I discovered <span class="h-card"><a href="https://social.ztfr.eu/@dome" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>dome</span></a></span> 's new Pinafore fork, Zocial. (Pinafore -> Semaphore -> Enafore -> Zocial). It's available at <a href="https://zocial.ztfr.eu" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>zocial.ztfr.eu</a>.</p><p>True, Zocial is generated using Claude, but this seems like the only practical opportunity for us to have to attain a fully-operational Pinafore-style interface. I honestly believe it's a matter of accessibility because no other front-end has given me the freedom to learn about the Fediverse more than Pinafore.</p><p>Maybe I'm being a selfish, neurotic, myopic Goldilocks. I have no rebuttal for those accusations and I apologize for disappointing anyone, but the Fedi is basically my makeshift warm line and I need to keep that as easy for me to use as possible because I can't function without it.</p><p>Yes, I know.. "just don't use it!" Yes, I realize if Nolan Lawson had never developed Pinafore, life would go on. Life would also continue if we'd never invented defibrillators, but they sure are handy sometimes.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://social.ztfr.eu/@dome" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>dome</span></a></span> fixed the above-mentioned bug, and a couple of others, in a matter of minutes today. It feels like finally being rid of a sore tooth. I hadn't realized just how infuriated I was becoming rather than coping.</p><p>Look, if someone wants to fork Enafore and repair the bugs that Claude already took care of, I'll almost certainly follow because with all due respect to <span class="h-card"><a href="https://social.ztfr.eu/@dome" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>dome</span></a></span>, I trust a human programmer more than I trust AI output.</p><p>However, that just doesn't seem to be possible. We're humans, and humans (understandably) have lives that aren't always congruent to dev plans.</p><p>But I personally *need* this interface to work. I love it. Surely I can't be the only one either, with so many people making forks of Pinafore.</p><p>So.. it's up to you dear reader (if you're even still awake) to decide if you want to try Zocial, but as for me I've already jumped head-first into it, slop or not.</p><p>/end_essay</p><p><a href="/tags/pinafore/" rel="tag">#Pinafore</a> <a href="/tags/semaphore/" rel="tag">#Semaphore</a> <a href="/tags/enafore/" rel="tag">#Enafore</a> <a href="/tags/zocial/" rel="tag">#Zocial</a> <a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#Mastodon</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a></p>

<p>How do you all navigate the fediverse?<br><br>Im currently using GoToSocial with Phanpy at the moment.<br><br><a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a></p>
<p>Exquisite.social is a delightful general Glitch Mastodon server, with a slight focus on technology, privacy and *BSD. We are here to play and make friends in a supportive atmosphere.</p><p>This server has a post size of up to 1250 characters.</p><p><img src="https://eggplant.place/media/emoji/social.growyourown.services/Fediverse.png" class="emoji" alt=":Fediverse:" title=":Fediverse:"> <a href="https://exquisite.social" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>exquisite.social</a></p><p>You can find out more at <a href="https://exquisite.social/about" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>exquisite.social/about</a> or contact the admin <span class="h-card"><a href="https://exquisite.social/@exquisite" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>exquisite</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="/tags/featuredserver/" rel="tag">#FeaturedServer</a> <a href="/tags/technology/" rel="tag">#Technology</a> <a href="/tags/tech/" rel="tag">#Tech</a> <a href="/tags/bsd/" rel="tag">#BSD</a> <a href="/tags/glitch/" rel="tag">#Glitch</a> <a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#Mastodon</a> <a href="/tags/glitchmastodon/" rel="tag">#GlitchMastodon</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> <a href="/tags/freefediverse/" rel="tag">#FreeFediverse</a></p>
<p>Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from <span class="h-card"><a href="https://threads.net/@gtconway3/" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gtconway3</span></a></span>.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://indieweb.social/@tchambers" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>tchambers</span></a></span> had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@phanpy" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>phanpy</span></a></span> though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, <span class="h-card"><a href="https://moth.social/@mammoth" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>mammoth</span></a></span>, <span class="h-card"><a href="https://tapbots.social/@ivory" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>ivory</span></a></span>, or <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.online/@IceCubesApp" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>IceCubesApp</span></a></span>)</p><p>I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from <a href="/tags/threads/" rel="tag">#Threads</a>. I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.</p><p>There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful. </p><p><a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> FTW.</p>
<p>There's a renewed conversation around the lack of options for migrating post history when you move to a new Mastodon server.</p><p>And seeing a few people mentioning how this can be a reason for folks to give up on the fediverse when their server shuts down, I hope the Mastodon team will prioritize this.</p><p><a href="https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i</span><span class="invisible">ssues/12423</span></a></p><p><a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#mastodon</a> <a href="/tags/mastodondev/" rel="tag">#MastodonDev</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> <a href="/tags/socialmedia/" rel="tag">#SocialMedia</a></p>

<p>How to use Really Simple Licensing (RSL) to block all AI crawlers</p><p><a href="https://rslstandard.org" rel="nofollow">RSL</a> is a new initiative by a group of big internet publishers that seeks to define the conditions under which AI crawlers can harvest their content. <a href="https://rslstandard.org/guide/what-is-rsl" rel="nofollow">Their guide</a> describes the various ways the content can be made available, including for free or a paid royalty but only by digging deeper into their reference material was I able to figure out how to prohibit all usage.</p><p>Your robots.txt needs to link to a XML file, like this:</p><p>License: <a href="https://your-domain.tld/rsl.xml" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>your-domain.tld/rsl.xml</a></p><p>Then in that file you want this:</p><p><rsl xmlns="<a href="https://rslstandard.org/rsl" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>rslstandard.org/rsl</a>"> <content url="/" server="<a href="https://rslcollective.org/api" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>rslcollective.org/api</a>"> <license> <prohibits type="usage">all</prohibits> </license> </content></rsl></p><p>That’s it.</p><p>If you want to be more liberal you could change the <prohibits> line to </p><p><permits type="usage">search</permits></p><p>That will let them use the content for search, which is probably quite similar to what traditional search engines do. <a href="https://rslstandard.org/rsl#element-permits" rel="nofollow">More details in their reference docs</a>.</p><p>Optionally to dispel any plausible deniability you can also add a link to rsl.xml as a Link header in every HTTP response.</p><p>Link: <<a href="https://example.com/rsl.xml" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>example.com/rsl.xml</a>>; rel="license"; type="application/rsl+xml"</p><p>It’s still too early to say whether AI crawlers will respect the terms of the license any publishers specify, it’ll probably take a court case or two to sort that out. </p><p><a href="https://crust.piefed.social/rsl.xml" rel="nofollow">PieFed has added RSL</a> to it’s code just now. <p>Thinking about building “<a href="/tags/fedify/" rel="tag">#Fedify</a> Studio” (tentative name)—a web-based <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a> debugging & development toolkit, like a supercharged version of ActivityPub.Academy and fedify inbox command. Imagine having a proper UI for testing activities, inspecting actors, debugging federation issues… Would this be useful for other ActivityPub developers out there?</p><p><a href="/tags/fedidev/" rel="tag">#fedidev</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a></p>
