<p>What Is The Fediverse?</p><p>If you’re not familiar with the name “<a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a>” – that’s okay. It is is an open society of web services that is already serving millions of people all around the world. They do this through a common language called <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a> that lets news and events flow from one site to the next. So, instead of checking in to 5 or 6 different corporate sites, you can find, follow, like, and share across many, many sources – all from your own, singluar Fediverse profile.</p>

<p>Snac2 is an excellent software solution for accessing the Fediverse. It is lightweight, very easy to compile and install, has minimal dependencies, and the development is progressing along a clear, clean, and logical path - thank you, <span class="h-card"><a href="https://comam.es/snac/grunfink" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>grunfink</span></a></span></p><p>Since last December, BSD Cafe has had, among its services, a snac instance - <a href="https://snac.bsd.cafe" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>snac.bsd.cafe</a> - which has been used sparingly, mainly by some for testing purposes. <p>I talk about the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> whenever I get a chance. The trick is being receptive, not pushy. Let them try it in their own time.</p><p>Only saying this because I now have two long time friends actively participating in the Fediverse where 6 months ago they had no interest.</p><p>One was even using an app with AP integration and didn't even know it.</p><p>Anecdotal? Absolutely! But our reality is built on our perceptions.</p><p>Very excited by this! 😄</p>

<p>Hey <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> people, I've an ask: If you appreciate all that I do for the fediverse and open social web, and you'd like to see me continue to do that work, please support my work financially.</p><p>Right now I'm having to look for work outside of the Fediverse because I simply cannot make ends meet.</p><p>I need €60-70k per year to support myself, with costs everywhere feeling increased (so that number may even be too low)</p><p>Right now, year to date, I've received a total of €20,170 in financial support from the community, and €22,450 from NLNet grants. I've also only had minimal freelance work this year, as I've been busy on grant work & try to focus on the fediverse & open social web.</p><p>So my total income isn't yet enough to be regularly sustainable. <p>I've streamlined theme development in <a href="https://github.com/toddsundsted/ktistec" rel="nofollow">Ktistec</a>. The theming system uses a hierarchy of CSS custom properties and fallbacks. Theme authors can customize a theme at multiple levels:</p><p>Base Colors Only</p><p>Define only base colors like --text-primary, --bg-primary, --bg-input, --semantic-primary, etc. Derived colors will auto-generate using color-mix formulas. For example:</p><p>:root { --semantic-primary: #ffa500; }</p><p>From this one line, theme-appropriate colors like --bg-accent-code, --anchor-color, etc. auto-generate.</p><p>Base Colors Plus Derived Colors</p><p>Define base colors and derived colors. Derived colors use custom values when defined. Undefined derived colors auto-generate. For example:</p><p>:root { --text-primary: #333; --text-primary-2: #ff0000; /* red for this specific shade */}</p><p>Given this theme, derived shades like --text-primary-1, --text-primary-3, and --text-primary-4 auto-generate. --text-primary-2 is red.</p><p>The simplest possible interesting theme redefines the primary semantic color.
