In case you missed it, I've reformatted the Fedi.Garden website so that it is as simple and easy as possible to sign up on a server that is well-run and reliable. If you know someone interested in the Fediverse, this might be a good way for them to sign up:

(Sorry to repeat this announcement, but last time I posted about it my hosting company decided to unexpectedly update its software and totally break the site 😖 Fedi.Garden is now working properly!)

#Fediverse

While content is federated currently, #identity isn’t.
Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate #Flipboard and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same #fediverse.

If not, I want to see them happen!

Please boost if you are interested or know someone who would be

License: CC-BY-SA 4.0

does anyone feel #Fediverse lacks #chat rooms ?
is there such thing?

I've migrated my #Mastodon account twice. It was not a very complex process, and took me less than half an hour each time. And I took almost all of my followers with me automatically.

And if you are on Mastodon.social, I recommend that you should consider migrating your account, too. I don't have anything personally against that instance, mind you. But it is _bad_ for the #Fediverse if there is any instance that has become "too big to block". If the moderators struggle with keeping out bad actors - and I've heard that there is a problem with that over there - then admins of other instances have to face the difficult choice of either tolerating an instance with bad actors, or cutting off their own users from a huge chunk of the people they are connected with.

And each instance has their own safety needs. I mean, I wouldn't want the strict enforcement of, say, Mastodon.art for my own instance, but I understand and can appreciate why their admins act as they do.

If you want to see the dangers of a "top-heavy" Fediverse, just look to #Bluesky . In theory, they are a federated system. But in practice, the vast majority of all users are concentrated on one system with one set of moderators so that their moderation sets the tone for Bluesky in its entirety - and their users have little choices but to accept that.

On the Fediverse, we have the chance to avoid that. And the more spread out the user base is, the better will the moderation be - it keeps everyone honest if users can easily leave to a different instance with better moderation.

https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/
