The investigative newsroom I work for, @ProPublica, is raising money right now. We report on abuses of power in the public interest - stories like corruption on the Supreme Court or the police response to the Uvalde school shooting. It was the first outlet to win a Pulitzer for web-first journalism. And if you donate through this link, you'll let our team know that the fediverse is an audience to pay attention to. https://give.propublica.org/give/346528/#!/donation/checkout?c_src=ben_mstdn #journalism #fediverse

How flippin' awesome is that!?
In one or two sentences, tell me one thing that stands out for you personally, one of the reasons you enjoy being here.
And if you're ok with me using your answer in promotional material to get more people here, add the tag #TellEveryone 📢
Giving @Flipboard another spin, since it’s a big supporter of the #Fediverse. It’s also a survivor…I remember covering it on ReadWriteWeb when it launched (or maybe that was a post by @jon?). Either way, here’s my #InternetHistory mag, if you’re a Flipboard user: https://flipboard.com/@ricmac/internet-history-e041t55qz

In case you missed it, there is now a Fediverse alternative to Strava called Wanderer:
There is a public server list at:
To sign up on a server, click on "Create Account", then "Login", then "Make One".
If you're running your own public Wanderer server you can add it to the list at https://github.com/Flomp/wanderer/discussions/361
Techy people can self-host using instructions at https://wanderer.to/run/installation
Então mudei instância faz um bom tempo então está mais que na hora da uma nova #introdução

@loops does, with full data exports, retention controls & opt-in analytics.

Today, we're beginning to federate a selection of publishers based in Germany and the U.K. We've also introduced @FlipboardDE, a new profile for the Mastodon community in Germany. In the first test, we are partnering with 21 publishers to federate their profiles and Magazines. Follow the profile to see all the stories they are posting on Flipboard, or topically curated Magazines to get coverage on specific areas of interest. Here's a blogpost that explains more.

WARNING: the #fediverse is not immune to #blackface #astroturfing; especially in the age of #AI.
just blocked an AIslopped account literally invoking the same Bernie Sanders grievances of the last 20 years, with a guest apperance of corporatist dems new target, Zohran Mamdani.
the #USApol consultant ecosystem is a special kind of grifting hell. they are sociopaths who don't care about political parties, only how much money they can make wrecking havoc.
block them with prejudice.

How do you all navigate the fediverse?
Im currently using GoToSocial with Phanpy at the moment.
#fediverse
Exquisite.social is a delightful general Glitch Mastodon server, with a slight focus on technology, privacy and *BSD. We are here to play and make friends in a supportive atmosphere.
This server has a post size of up to 1250 characters.
You can find out more at https://exquisite.social/about or contact the admin @exquisite

Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from @gtconway3.
@tchambers had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect @phanpy though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, @mammoth, @ivory, or @IceCubesApp)
I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from #Threads. I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.
There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful.
#Fediverse FTW.
There's a renewed conversation around the lack of options for migrating post history when you move to a new Mastodon server.
And seeing a few people mentioning how this can be a reason for folks to give up on the fediverse when their server shuts down, I hope the Mastodon team will prioritize this.

How to use Really Simple Licensing (RSL) to block all AI crawlers
RSL is a new initiative by a group of big internet publishers that seeks to define the conditions under which AI crawlers can harvest their content. Their guide describes the various ways the content can be made available, including for free or a paid royalty but only by digging deeper into their reference material was I able to figure out how to prohibit all usage.
Your robots.txt needs to link to a XML file, like this:
License: https://your-domain.tld/rsl.xml
Then in that file you want this:
<rsl xmlns="https://rslstandard.org/rsl"> <content url="/" server="https://rslcollective.org/api"> <license> <prohibits type="usage">all</prohibits> </license> </content></rsl>That’s it.
If you want to be more liberal you could change the <prohibits> line to
<permits type="usage">search</permits>That will let them use the content for search, which is probably quite similar to what traditional search engines do. More details in their reference docs.
Optionally to dispel any plausible deniability you can also add a link to rsl.xml as a Link header in every HTTP response.
Link: <https://example.com/rsl.xml>; rel="license"; type="application/rsl+xml"
It’s still too early to say whether AI crawlers will respect the terms of the license any publishers specify, it’ll probably take a court case or two to sort that out.
PieFed has added RSL to it’s code just now. Instance admins who wish to disable RSL can set the ALLOW_AI_CRAWLERS environment variable to anything.
