I’ve been experiencing a number of symptoms on this account for several weeks, at least.

Outbound toots are delayed by a great deal (~1h). They don’t show up on others’ TLs until long after I’ve posted. I suspect this varies by the other instance. I sometimes get much faster responses from certain users despite a general, overall delay of about an hour.

When there is a reaction or response to a post, I first see it on the Notifications tab in the UI (web or app) & often more or less right away. Then much later (typically an hour or so), a push notification shows up.

I suspect this has something to do with my instance, c.im, though the status page is always green. I wonder if it involves versions of #Mastodon or something (currently 4.4.3 on c.im). I’ve always assumed it would eventually clear up, but no sign of that yet.

So I think before long I may start another account. Idk if I’ll migrate this one or just have a second account. At least, maybe I can prove that the delay doesn’t follow the change of instance. Not sure what else it could be.

So I’ll go digging again, but in case anyone has opinions, any recommendations for new instances? I want to avoid the big, populous ones like mastodon.social. I chose c.im in part for high limits on posts (8 poll options, 5k char limit, etc). I also use the search function extensively. I think it’s not available by default, so not every instance has it. (Not sure if that’s right.)

After reading about a major #Funkwhale instance shutting down, I'm wondering whether I should keep my podcast on open.audio.

The new version of @mastowatch is in #Testflight!

The navigation scheme for the app has been totally rebuilt and feels *awesome* in iOS 26. The prior version immediately feels ancient by comparison.

This version also includes maybe the most requested feature ever, iCloud syncing for favorites! History is still stored on your device but favorites should sync to any device running the new version.

We're excited to share an update on #Fedify's development! While we're actively working on Fedify 1.9 in the main branch, we've also begun preparations for Fedify 2.0 in the next branch.

Before you get too excited about revolutionary new features, we want to set clear expectations: Fedify 2.0 will primarily focus on cleaning up technical debt that we couldn't address due to backward compatibility constraints. This means removing deprecated APIs and making breaking changes that will ultimately result in a cleaner, more maintainable codebase. Think of it as a major housekeeping release—necessary work that will make Fedify better in the long run.

Some of the planned improvements include adding readonly modifiers throughout our types and interfaces to better enforce our immutability-by-default principle, implementing our own RFC 6570 URI Template library for symmetric expansion and pattern matching, and various CLI tool migrations to our new Optique framework for better cross-runtime support. While the majority of changes will be about refinement rather than revolution, these updates will strengthen Fedify's foundation and improve interoperability across the #fediverse. Yesterday morning I was flipping through my Mastodon timeline via Flipboard and I saw a post from @gtconway3.

@tchambers had boosted George's post using whatever app Tim likes to use to these days (I suspect @phanpy though it could just as easily have been the native Mastodon app, @mammoth, @ivory, or @IceCubesApp)

I tapped on George's profile and saw he was posting from #Threads. I tapped the follow button and now I see his latest posts in Mastodon and Flipboard.

There's a whole new array of apps, people and posts in the fediverse and it all just works. It's wonderful.

There's a renewed conversation around the lack of options for migrating post history when you move to a new Mastodon server.

And seeing a few people mentioning how this can be a reason for folks to give up on the fediverse when their server shuts down, I hope the Mastodon team will prioritize this.

How to use Really Simple Licensing (RSL) to block all AI crawlers

RSL is a new initiative by a group of big internet publishers that seeks to define the conditions under which AI crawlers can harvest their content. Their guide describes the various ways the content can be made available, including for free or a paid royalty but only by digging deeper into their reference material was I able to figure out how to prohibit all usage.

Your robots.txt needs to link to a XML file, like this:

License: https://your-domain.tld/rsl.xml

Then in that file you want this:

<rsl xmlns="https://rslstandard.org/rsl"> <content url="/" server="https://rslcollective.org/api"> <license> <prohibits type="usage">all</prohibits> </license> </content></rsl>

That’s it.

If you want to be more liberal you could change the <prohibits> line to

<permits type="usage">search</permits>

That will let them use the content for search, which is probably quite similar to what traditional search engines do. More details in their reference docs.

Optionally to dispel any plausible deniability you can also add a link to rsl.xml as a Link header in every HTTP response.

It’s still too early to say whether AI crawlers will respect the terms of the license any publishers specify, it’ll probably take a court case or two to sort that out.

PieFed has added RSL to it’s code just now. Instance admins who wish to disable RSL can set the ALLOW_AI_CRAWLERS environment variable to anything.

Thinking about building “#Fedify Studio” (tentative name)—a web-based #ActivityPub debugging & development toolkit, like a supercharged version of ActivityPub.Academy and fedify inbox command. Imagine having a proper UI for testing activities, inspecting actors, debugging federation issues… Would this be useful for other ActivityPub developers out there?
