Eduard has a motorcycle & decided 2 go in the nearest vet which is idk how or what but I was just sobbing while Jury is wrapped in Blankets, Im partially drenched of the rain & just let fate decides. Later on I found out that Freya called the nearest ER Clinic that had a Vet ready that time which is still very early.. <p>A couple days ago, I got a DM from a <a href="/tags/bonfire/" rel="tag">#Bonfire</a> user. I happily replied and senta follow request—but the Accept never came back, even though they hadn'tenabled manuallyApprovesFollowers. My DM reply probably never arrived either. Classic interop bug.</p><p>I checked out the Bonfire source and dug in. Turns out Bonfire hasn't implemented <a href="https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9421" rel="nofollow">RFC 9421</a> yet, so it was silently discarding any activity signed with it. That alone would be workable, except for one more issue: Bonfire was responding 200 OK even when signature verification failed, instead of 401 Unauthorized.</p><p>This matters because <a href="https://fedify.dev/manual/send#double-knocking-http-signatures" rel="nofollow">Fedify implements</a> a <a href="https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-http-signature/#how-to-upgrade-supported-versions" rel="nofollow">double-knocking mechanism</a>—if a request signed with RFC 9421 fails, it retries with the older draft cavage signature. But since Bonfire returned 200 OK on the failed first knock, <a href="/tags/fedify/" rel="tag">#Fedify</a> had no reason to send a second one.</p><p>I filed two issues on the Bonfire <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a> repo—one requesting <a href="https://github.com/bonfire-networks/activity_pub/issues/7" rel="nofollow">RFC 9421 support</a>, and one about <a href="https://github.com/bonfire-networks/activity_pub/issues/8" rel="nofollow">returning 401 on invalid signatures</a>. For the latter, I also sent a PR, which got merged pretty quickly: <a href="https://github.com/bonfire-networks/activity_pub/pull/9" rel="nofollow">bonfire-networks/activity_pub#9</a>.</p><p>That said, individual Bonfire instances won't pick up the fix until they actually deploy it. So in the meantime, I patched <a href="https://github.com/fedify-dev/hollo/commit/a883fd1b2158463b1ceb7894e2084d598bfaabc4" rel="nofollow">Hollo</a> and <a href="https://github.com/hackers-pub/hackerspub/commit/02de643c709984b016bc92c4a18c1c284a59c49a" rel="nofollow">Hackers' Pub</a> to use draft-cavage-http-signatures-12 as the <a href="https://fedify.dev/manual/federation#firstknock" rel="nofollow">firstKnock</a>, so Bonfire instances can at least understand the first request.</p><p>One last thing: Fedify caches whether a given server supports RFC 9421, and the Bonfire servers I'd already talked to were cached as “supports RFC 9421”—because they'd been returning 200 OK. I had to manually clear that cache on both hollo.social and hackers.pub before everything finally worked.</p><p>After all that, the mutual follow went through and my DM reply landed. No trackers, no ads. But here's the cool part: it's a Trojan horse for the fediverse. Your profile link is itself an ActivityPub actor. That means people can interact with it directly in the fediverse, and it encourages exploration of open platforms.</p><p>Fediverse users, If you have multiple accounts (<a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#Mastodon</a>, <a href="/tags/pixelfed/" rel="tag">#Pixelfed</a>, Loops, a federated blog…), you know the struggle: sometimes you just want one persona to follow. I think it is right to give an update on the situation.</p><p>Starting in mid-December, my wife came down with the flu. Nothing serious, but it left her with a problem that all the doctors we consulted have identified as long flu. Similar to long COVID, it is a debilitating condition, at times completely disabling. She started a treatment, but had some issues and had to change it. This treatment, however, makes the symptoms worse for a few weeks before improving them, and the result is that we are currently in that phase: she is not well, she is worried, and of course I am too.</p><p>This has given me time, over the past weeks, to focus on projects like MastoBlaster, also to keep my mind active on something different, something good for my spirit and mental well-being.</p><p>But in these days, probably the hardest in years, I am in "emergencies only" mode, or almost. No tiramisu, few outings, some good lasagna - but mostly concern and hope for a return to normality. The doctors told her that in her case it is a temporary condition, but it is not clear exactly how long it will last, which is why there is a treatment, to help her live normally while everything gradually returns to normal. In the meantime, I am the solid part, but clearly I also have to take care of everything she usually handles.</p><p>Life is more often uphill than downhill, so we need to make the most of the good moments and not focus on trivial things. This is why I have always tried to make this place a positive and peaceful one: we all have battles to fight, serious or less serious problems, happiness and despair. Here, at least, we can focus on what you enjoy.</p><p>So I leave you with two coffees, made with my mother’s moka pot, which remind me of a peaceful day in this period when the sky outside and the climate inside are the same color: gray.</p>

<p>Push Notifications and MastoBlaster</p>On iOS, push notifications must go through Apple’s servers. This is not something that can be bypassed, as it is part of the operating system’s architecture.<br><br>MastoBlaster, like other Fediverse apps, uses a design that maximizes user privacy.<br><br>When you log in to your instance, the app and the server exchange the necessary cryptographic keys. The app also communicates to the instance the address of the relay, which is the server responsible for forwarding notifications to Apple.<br><br>When a new notification is generated:<br><br>1. Your instance encrypts the notification.<br>2. It sends the encrypted payload to the relay.<br>3. The relay forwards it to Apple using its own authentication key.<br>4. Apple delivers it to your device.<br><br>The content of the notification is encrypted by your Fediverse server and can only be decrypted by your device.<br><br>The relay, which in the case of MastoBlaster is dedicated and hosted on a FreeBSD server, receives only encrypted data. <p><a href="/tags/pawfed/" rel="tag">#PawFed</a> is a project close to my heart. It's a collaborative map for animal welfare that bridges the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> and <a href="/tags/openstreetmap/" rel="tag">#OpenStreetMap</a>.</p><p>The idea: mention <span class="h-card"><a href="https://pawfed.org/@PawFed" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>PawFed</span></a></span> from your Mastodon account with hashtags and a location, and your report appears on the map. No signup, no app, just your existing Fediverse account.<br>It's not perfect yet, but the foundation is there. We need to talk about something.</p><p>While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.</p><p>Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.</p><p>My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.</p><p>🏇 🐎 🐴 </p><p>Have you sat on a horse?</p><p>Please boost for scientific accuracy.</p>
