Release v2.4.11 of Ktistec

Ktistec is taking steps toward supporting multiple users. The first (small) step removes the actor panel from the unauthenticated home page and replaces it with a site description. You can see this in action at epiktistes.com. The site description is managed on the settings page using the same rich text editor used to edit posts. See the README for more information.

Other changes in this release:

Added

Support a "site description" on the unauthenticated home page.
Support autofocus on onboarding and authentication forms.
Add trix_editor view helper.

Changed

Remove accounts from unauthenticated home page.
Persist timeline filters in session.

Fixed

Exclude abstract classes from all_types output. (fixes #104)
Work around bug in at_beginning_of_week. (see crystal-lang/crystal#16112)

Other

Disable streaming updates on pages other than the first. (fixes #118)
Pin Crystal version at 1.16.3 in Docker build. (see libxml_ext#1)

#ktistec #fediverse #activitypub #crystallang

Does mastodon have any concept of "follow a post"? Sometimes someone asks a good question and I want to get notifications for its responses the same as if I had posted it.

Slack, as an example, has "get notified of new replies" for threads.

This would be a big boost for "usefulness" of mastodon for me.
#mastodon #fediverse #howto #tips

I think the only #Fediverse apps that could comply with age verification laws (as they have the tools available) are #Threads & #WordPress (I believe commercial plugins are available for the latter).

Age verification tech is best handled by experienced third-party apps (for security reasons), but #Mississippi does not understand the risk & cost factors for complying with their law.

👉🏾 #Mastodon says it doesn’t ‘have the means’ to comply with age verification laws https://techcrunch.com/2025/08/29/mastodon-says-it-doesnt-have-the-means-to-comply-with-age-verification-laws/

The bottomline rule is this: Never ever trust anyone asking you to #verify or reset your keys and/or passwords. Ask first if you really need to confirm.

Yes, even if it is coming from what appears to be a legitimate email domain name because it can be spoofed!

Absolutely no one will ever ask you to verify your account in the #Fediverse network. It is not part of the experience. Sure, there were third-party services who did this a few years back during the Twitter Migration 2.0 but those were primarily targeted to well-established accounts from Twitter (and usually journalists), not to random people. Not you. Not me. And was definitely not in a spammy way.

Always remember, if you are not sure, just ask. There is nothing wrong with asking. If people laughed at you or ridiculed you for asking about a "simple" or "common sense" thing, block them (maybe one day you'll have the last laugh too).

You know what "askx means?

A-sk, and it shall be given = intelligence
S-eek, and you shall find = knowledge
K-nock, and it shall be opened = wisdom

Remember, A.S.K.

#Pixelfed and #Piefed are not the same—and no, the similar names don’t make them cousins. They’re completely unrelated projects.

Pixelfed is for images. Think Instagram without Meta breathing down your neck.

Piefed is for communities. Think Reddit without the corporate overlords.

But here’s the beauty: both run on the #Fediverse, which means they actually talk to each other. I’ve posted from Pixelfed right into Piefed—something you’ll never see in the walled gardens.

A part of me wants to apologize to #mastodon and the #fediverse for dragging that TERF platformer across the coals. I will not, however.

97.3% of the time, I mind my business. We talk about music, dabble in politics, you laugh at my corny jokes about struggling with python (and then send help), and post fun times from the Recording Academy parties.

However. Do not get it confused. When any person oppressed by hegemonic institutions is being attacked, I will speak, and it will be LOUD.

When I first started working with #ActivityPub, before #Fedify existed, it felt like writing web apps in Perl and CGI in the late '90s. Interesting, even exciting—but never comfortable. That era where your business logic and your protocol plumbing were just… the same thing:

print "HTTP/1.1 200 OK"print "Content-Type: text/html"printprint "Hello, world!"

Decades of web development have given us layers of abstraction we now take for granted. Nobody hand-parses application/x-www-form-urlencoded query strings anymore. Nobody writes their own JSON codec, or manually constructs HTTP request/response messages. These things just aren't your problem when you're building an app.

ActivityPub development still feels like they are your problem. What do you do when the https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#actor property comes in as a string instead of an array? What about when https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#object is an embedded entity rather than a URI? How exactly do you implement HTTP Signatures? And wait—what's Linked Data Signatures, and do you need that too?

The real issue isn't that ActivityPub is complicated per se. It's that you can't get away with understanding it at a high level. You have to know it the way an implementor knows it—every edge case, every inconsistency in how different servers serialize JSON-LD, every signature scheme that exists in the wild. That's a lot to learn before you can even start thinking about your actual app. And when developers understandably cut corners on the protocol to focus on their product, it quietly becomes an interoperability problem for the whole ecosystem.

What I want ActivityPub development to feel like: you spend a day understanding the big picture, and then you just… build your app. That was the goal when I started Fedify, and honestly, we're not fully there yet. But it's where I want to get.

#fedidev #fediverse

Journey with self hosting for personal blog and fediverse

@selfhosted

Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others.

Current setup: Hostinger vps kvm2 plan, Debian12, YunoHost, Hostinger's docker manager installed.

Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004.

I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others.

So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost.

Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros.

Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract...

In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie.

Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it.

For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system.

A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill.

Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared.

My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks.

Hopefully share others' experiences as well!

#ActivityPub #blind #fediverse #introduction #selfhost #selfhosting #WordPress #YunoHost

Really enjoyed reading @rwg’s “Move Slowly and Build Bridges”. I learned a lot of #fediverse history and philosophy. Makes me proud to be here and makes me want to learn from others who choose to make this place their digital home.

The other thing that the #Guppe incident showed us is that the #Fediverse seriously needs the #Nomadic protocol.

Let's say the Fediverse understands the protocol: just move to a new domain, inform all instances "this is the new domain, automatically re-subscribe please", done. Life goes on for regular people.

I am not saying it is that easy or that's how exactly it will work. But it could've been avoided. Right now, entire communities are gone, many who were relying on it are now disconnected. (Then again, I can argue that it's time to clean the membership since many accounts are also stagnant.)

So, when? #ActivityPub2 ?

#SocialWeb #OpenSocial #OpenSocialWeb

I know a lot of you still think of the #Fediverse as just “Mastodon”.

But it’s far more than that. There’s an entire ecosystem of federated message boards that’s already proven popular: #Piefed, #NodeBB, #Lemmy, #Mbin, and #Discourse.

Even the classics like #Friendica and #Hubzilla have solid forum features baked in.

If you’re only here for the microblogging, you’re missing a key piece. Communities built around interests are something #Twitter never offered, and #Bluesky still doesn’t.

So if you’re looking to replace your #Facebook Groups, the Fediverse already has you covered.

Another giant introduction

Hi everyone! I don't know what happened to my pinned introduction, so here is a somewhat new one.

I've been here in the Fedi since 2017. You can listen to an interview at the link below.

I'm a blind and gay writer. I keep a blog. I call it my soul on the internet because you won’t get the same thing every time. I write huge rants. I write short narrative stories about eating ice cream like it's the first time I'm having an orgasm. I write lyrical musings about crying in the shower. I pen essays about battling with a smart fridge. You'll never get just one thing with me and my website.

As for fiction, I write M/M Romance featuring blind and or disabled people, because disabled people deserve happy endings too. My romances generally always have a HEA instead of an HFN. I'm not the best with series. I also tend to enjoy doing novellas rather than full length novels, but I do novels as well. It's just that novellas are my comfort zone.

My Romances are quite angsty. They ask a lot of questions of the reader, and they feature things I'm extremely proud of, like in my young adult Romances I feature things like supportive gay dads to a teenager. I don't shy away from potentially triggering subjects because it mirrors my own life.

That being said, if you don't like angsty Romances, I'm probably not your author but I also pen happy Romances too, like one I just finished where a Chef that's lost his sense of taste falls in love with a Blind taste tester because of a job he put out onto the internet. I love exploring dynamics such as that in a very slow, character centric, way.

My blog/website has everything about me. It's the best way to get inside of my head. I don't use video based spaces often because I'm blind so video spaces really don't interest me.

My blog is also a podcast for folks that prefer listening to reading.

I listen to podcasts religiously, especially fiction podcasts. Podcast audiobooks. Fiction audio dramas. All kinds of fiction podcasts.

I'm an audiobook reader.

I love reading character driven stories.

Some additional things that bring me profound joy.

Boy bands. Anime. Video games. Nerd media. Cookies. Video game music. Chocolate. Ice cream. Cats. Listening to audio only let’s Plays via podcasts. Cookies. Yes, I said it twice! That's how much I love them!

I rarely wear clothes that match. I wear things for comfort. Fabrics that feel good to me.

I take extensive social media breaks, especially in the summer/fall time because that's when I'm doing events, hanging out with offline people, and terrorizing my local town.

I'm huge into local activism and local change because I believe that all local progress, especially on a mass scale, will cause national politics to buck up and maybe actually do things for its voter base.

I'm a tech geek that hates everything tech culture. I also hate everything hustle culture. Influencer culture. Bletch.

As for links, the only two links of mine you'll need are below but I also included an interview link.

My podcast, https://weirdwritings.pinecast.co/

My website. https://sightlessscribbles.com/

Interview with me on Fediverse #Accessibility https://audio.firesidefedi.live/@firesidefedi/episodes/robert-kingett-accessibility-in-the-fediverse

#Intro #Introduction #Introductions #Fediverse #Mastodon #Romance #RomanceLandia
