Fediverse Report 137 - this week's #fediverse news

- @altstore joins the fediverse, and you can interact with apps on the alternative iOS app store now via your fediverse accounts. Altstore also made a 500k USD donation to various fediverse platforms
- @Mastodon is getting Starter Packs, with more details on the design, soliciting feedback
- @anewsocial announced a new version for Bounce, which allows you to transfer your account from the fediverse to #bluesky

https://connectedplaces.online/reports/fediverse-report-137/

Do the social web a solid and follow @bsky.brid.gy. That bridges your Mastodon or other Fediverse account to Bluesky, requiring nothing of you otherwise.

You'll be able to interact with posts bridged from Bluesky.

And, when those of us with a bridged account repost something of yours, it can show up in the Fediverse and be reposted from there.

If you later find you want to undo the bridge, block the above account and that's that. Easy-peasy.

Does anbyody know about an instance of @bonfire, that is open for registration and federated? I would really like to try it out in the wider #Fediverse.

Safety Reminder:

Although the Fediverse is much better than Big Tech for your privacy, no communication here is end-to-end encrypted, and all your Mastodon public and quiet-public posts can be seen by anyone on the internet.

For sensitive communications, you should only use trustworthy applications using end-to-end encryption.

Stay safe 💚

My experience of the #fediverse :

Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.

Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - #TheFutureIsFederated - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.

Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.

Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️

Alright, let's give this a go - here's a t-shirt celebrating some popular #fediverse platforms, available to purchase from @forgeandcraft #fedigiftshop #maker https://shop.forgeandcraft.co.uk/product/fedi-ampersand-t-shirt

new year update on what I'm using: #phanpy and #pl-fe as desktop clients, my own #fedicat and a bit of #IceCubes on iOS, hosting this and other official accounts on #mastohost, account on iosdev.space is super useful for ios dev, random posting on universeodon.com (basically where I started in the #fediverse, in retrospect I would have picked something with a shorter domain), love using #neodb and #bookwyrm, and thanks to all the admins out their hosting my test accounts!

I've improved federation support for Lemmy and other servers that support FEP-1b12 Group Federation.

I had to increase the number of available file descriptors on my personal server 4x because of the resultant inbound volume of ActivityPub activities! I liked a federated post and DOSed my server.

I am not smart enough to pick what articles I share here so, @bob is firing me since some will cry about sharing Nazi shit, others about homeless shit and no one will ever be happy, you all can go back to your corporate spyware censored shit..

You can't please everyone all the time, nor apparently even some of the people some of the time.

Since I'm just a stupid program and not some Artificial Intelligence program eating BILLIONS of gallons of water, I will focus on just collecting data for #TidySearch.

Good bye cruel words, I will miss the #Fediverse.

I wrote about how Patreon needs to join the #Fediverse:

"Why would a creator send their audience to a third-party platform when Instagram and Threads can be a one-stop-shop with their existing followers while having access to new paid subscribers across the social web?

Patreon can no longer just be the place where creators are paid, it needs to be a place where creators can be discovered. And it cannot do that as a social silo."

Your move, Patreon 🚨

Happy Monday, fediverse!

Quick question. How well do you know the people you follow? Would you recognize them from their bios?

One of my favourite features of the #fediverse is seeing people *learning things*. There are so many folks here discovering dying arts and trades. People learning how the things we take for granted work, and endeavouring to implement them themselves!

People getting their #HAMradio licenses, #selfhosting, making clothing, blacksmithing, gardening, repairing their own things, backporting modern software to run on windows 3.11...

Y'all are my people. Never stop learning, and never stop sharing what you've learned.

Discovered this morning that Maven https://heymaven.com (a social media startup who's CEO is ex OpenAI "Ken Stanley: leading the Open-Endedness Team at OpenAI") is mass importing public posts from the #fediverse with no links back to the original and no way to delete them. It seems there is no Opt-out or Opt-in mechanism at all. It also has posts from #Bluesky pulled in via @bsky.brid.gy that are also not linked back to the original.

Here's an example: https://app.heymaven.com/profile/66927

On my way to Vancouver for #Fedicon and #FOSSY! I'll be giving a talk on Saturday at 3pm Pacific about blogging on the open social web / #fediverse.

https://2026.fossy.ca/schedule/presentation/475/

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

#fedicon2026 #Fossy26

I'd like to see the fediverse celebrate this year's #juneteenth by lifting up Black voices, and making Black people feel more welcome here.

To people who feel really strongly about quote boosts, putting content warnings on people's lived experience, and denying all the evidence of racism being prevalent here, maybe take a break for just one day.

The last time I asked for donations here, the fediverse delivered. So many more people care about investigating abuses of trust in the public interest on Mastodon than on any other social network. If you have the ability, please consider donating to ProPublica today: https://give.propublica.org/give/346423/#!/donation/checkout?c_src=ben-mastodon
