<p>My experience of the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> :</p><p>Year 1 (2023): <br>It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.</p><p>Year 2 (2024): <br>I start a blog - <a href="/tags/thefutureisfederated/" rel="tag">#TheFutureIsFederated</a> - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.</p><p>Year 3 (2025):<br>My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with <a href="/tags/yunohost/" rel="tag">#YunoHost</a>... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.</p><p>Year 4 (2026):<br>I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁♀️</p>

<p>I've improved federation support for <a href="https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy" rel="nofollow">Lemmy</a> and other servers that support <a href="https://github.com/julianlam/feps/blob/main/fep/1b12/fep-1b12.md" rel="nofollow">FEP-1b12 Group Federation</a>.</p><p>I had to increase the number of available file descriptors on my personal server 4x because of the resultant inbound volume of ActivityPub activities! <p>BIG PEERTUBE CO-OP UPDATE:</p><p>Last night, I interviewed the final steering committee candidate.</p><p>And just like that—it’s official. We now have seven incredible people (plus me) who’ve come together to co-organize this co-op.</p><p>Every single person brings something unique—skills, experience, heart—and it honestly feels like we’re assembling a dream team.</p><p>This moment is a turning point. We’re no longer just talking about starting a co-op. We are one in the making. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be shaping our mission, vision, and bylaws—the foundation for what will eventually become a fully incorporated BC co-operative.</p><p>It’s wild to think how far this idea has come in just two weeks. <p>A fun chart.</p><p>For the numbers that are used for this graph, I grabbed the post count and known instances count from this <a href="https://mookiesplace.com/api/v1/instance" rel="nofollow">endpoint</a> on my <a href="/tags/gotosocial/" rel="tag">#GoToSocial</a> instance via a daily cron job. I have been doing this since I brought up <a href="https://mookiesplace.com" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>mookiesplace.com</a> -- I did this for my previous instances too, but never posted about it.</p><p>It's fun to see how my instance federates over time and to see how much I post over time. There are a few significant bumps in known instances, those happened when I posted something that got boosted / liked a bunch over a short period of time (ie. after I catch the eye of <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@lisamelton" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>lisamelton</span></a></span>).</p><p>My instance is knows about 60% of the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a>.</p>

People learning how the things we take for granted work, and endeavouring to implement them themselves!</p><p>People getting their <a href="/tags/hamradio/" rel="tag">#HAMradio</a> licenses, <a href="/tags/selfhosting/" rel="tag">#selfhosting</a>, making clothing, blacksmithing, gardening, repairing their own things, backporting modern software to run on windows 3.11... </p><p>Y'all are my people. Never stop learning, and never stop sharing what you've learned.</p>

<p>Discovered this morning that Maven <a href="https://heymaven.com" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>heymaven.com</a> (a social media startup who's CEO is ex OpenAI "Ken Stanley: leading the Open-Endedness Team at OpenAI") is mass importing public posts from the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> with no links back to the original and no way to delete them. It seems there is no Opt-out or Opt-in mechanism at all.
