Reading Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson. Almost done, but gods below will this fight ever end? Please end me with a shardblade, but this is boring.

I just finished my ARC of Genevieve Cogman 's A Scholar's Guide to Demonology and Other Dark Arts (thanks to @panmacmillan ) and absolutely adored it. Definitely preorder this one!

#bookstodon #fantasy

This is a screenshot of Steph's five-star review of A Scholar's Guide to Demonology and Other Dark Arts. It reads: I laughed out loud SO many times as I read this absolutely delightful romp of a book, set in a girls' boarding school in Yorkshire where the spiked gates are sensibly aimed at keeping the girls in (for their own safety as well as that of the wider world) rather than keeping most (comparatively hapless) intruders out - and the demons who get summoned along the way are far less of a menace than the (fabulously creative) students. Every casually dropped mention in act one gets fabulously well followed through in the dazzlingly clever climax, and I cannot wait for the next Grayne Girls adventure!

This is the blurb I just sent the publisher:
"A dazzlingly clever, laugh-out-loud delight. Watch out for Grayne girls, world! I only wish that I was one of them." - Stephanie Burgis, author of Wooing the Witch Queen

Definitely preorder it!

An adverticement picture made by me (hiisikoloart/Mara Reboi) for book named: Once Upon a Fairytale: A collection of original fairytales. Background is a bed of moss (a hint which will be clear if you read my story in the book) lit by golden specks of light. The texts around the eBook cover shown in a phone says, "A Collection of Original Fairytales - OUT NOW! Dark Fantasy Stories from Human Authors, NO AI." The cover is photoedited (NO AI) by artist: D'arte Oriel, and shows a dark forest, thorns around the edges of the cover, and a thorny, red rose at the middle. Golden filigrees frame the cover among smaller roses, and magic particles. The subtitle "a collection of original fairytales" reads at the top" while the main title reads at the bottom on bold, golden font "Once Upon a Fairytale". Note: By buying this book you support human work - each story was written by a human author, edited by human(s), formatted by human(s), and the cover was also made by a human. All authors and the cover artist (who is not me) are against use of AI in any part of the creative work.

"When a comm builds atop a fault line, do you blame its walls when they inevitably crush the people inside? No; you blame whoever was stupid enough to think they could defy the laws of nature forever. Well, some worlds are built on a fault line of pain, held up by nightmares. Don’t lament when those worlds fall. Rage that they were built doomed in the first place."

— N. K. Jemisin: The Stone Sky

"Built on a fault line of pain, held up by nightmares" could be the historical footnote for this era of capitalist imperialism. Could also be the official tagline for the USA.

Ebook and paperback: https://books2read.com/SheSeeksPeace

The Hunter seeks peace and quiet to mourn the loss of her best friend in a world that seems bound and determined to make that task impossible. Enemies attack when she’d rather be alone, allies can’t take a hint and the arch-demon Wrath seeks the Hunter’s hand in marriage, even though she’d sooner kill him.

(Left) The cover of She Seeks Peace, by Owen Tyme.

The background is a snow-capped, craggy mountain with green, grassy hills at its base, which feature yellow and blue flowers.

The foreground is dominated by the round symbol for peace, in gold. Along the bottom of it are two olive branches. At the top is a dove in flight. Arranged on the lower three spokes of it are three figures based on the AIGA symbol for a woman. The figure on the right is blue. The one in the middle is a very dark gray, bordering on black, which includes a top hat. The figure on the left is red and has horns, like a demon.

(Right) The background is a view from the interior of a gun's barrel, with the rifling very apparent and the following quote over the top:

Reggie looked down the barrel of one of his own pistols, which the girl held in both hands, because the M1911 was a little large for someone so small.

There was a long, silent moment as the girl giggled and met his gaze. The murderous look was gone, replaced by something more playful, like a cat toying with a mouse.

Audiobook: https://owentyme.bandcamp.com/album/short-of-tyme-the-most-powerful-words

Hungry and hunting alone, a goblin boy meets a bouncing, blue slime and assumes it will be dinner. Naturally, the slime has other ideas, and the boy gets his hind-end handed to him by what’s supposed to be one of the weakest monsters of the forest.

(Left) The cover of The Most Powerful Words, by Owen Tyme, which consists of a temperate forest path in twilight, with a tree on the right side, which hangs over the path. At the base of the tree is a translucent, blue slime monster, with shiny, black eyes that give it a somewhat cute appearance, while the shadow that's visible at its base almost looks like a big mouth. The air has an almosty golden look, because there's a hint of fog in it. The cover is framed with beveled stone.

(Right) The background is a bookcase with three shelves that are filled with old-looking books. Some have bookmark ribbons that stick off the edge, adding a little color. The books are largely brown, with ribbed spines. The following quote is laid over it:

“There are words so powerful, they can shake the foundations of reality or alter the fate of the world.”

“The most powerful words of all can change a man’s heart and mind about old, incorrect beliefs.”

Richland, Ohio is a sleepy rural community. But it’s now facing ruin after a predatory private equity firm defrauds the local factory. Now, Richland is primed to explode. Just not in the way anyone expected. Because when corporate greed threatens this town, its citizens don’t just take it silently – they make a change. A big one. Which might involve a few unexpected tentacles.

Mike Boyd left Richland decades ago to find his way in the world. But when he's called back to tie up loose ends, he finds far more than he bargained for. Teaming up with the overwhelmed Police Chief, Mike becomes entangled in a wild sequence of events that will bring this tiny village to global attention, change humanity forever . . . and, perhaps, spell its doom.

Might becoming a monster make you a better human?

From John Sclazi, the blockbuster author of The Kaiju Preservation Society, comes Monsters of Ohio – a thrilling speculative adventure with tentacles, hope amidst hardship and the (potential) end of the world.

(Left) The cover of The Inverted Glass, by Owen Tyme.

The Background is a pink and purple nebula in space.

The foreground is largely line art, in white, with a black shadow outline.

At the center is an hourglass. The bottom has black sand, with a white figure standing in it. The top has is an inverted mirror image of the bottom, with a black figure in white sand.

The hourglass serves as the balance point for a set of scales, which hold a heart and a feather. The heart is on the left and the feather on the right. The heart is lower than the feather.

(Right) Lying in blue sand is a heart made of the same sand, full of cracks. It glows from the inside in a warm, yellow color. Over that is the following quote:

The cover of Scarlet Eye: She Consumes Poison, by Owen Tyme.

The perspective if from the darkness within a mouth with long fangs, the teeth appearing as a dark silhouette along the top and bottom. The background is a scene centering on a factory polluting the environment, putting out smoke and dumping chemicals into water. The water includes fish skeletons, to demonstrate how deadly the chemicals are. There are also some dead trees in frame, further hinting at the deadliness.

The foreground is a rather good looking and shiny red apple, which has the black silhouette of a spider on it, an indication of its hidden, toxic nature.

(Left) The cover of Troll Song, by Owen Tyme, Illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

There's a woman in mud spattered white, leather armor crossing a pair of short swords against the neck of a terrified, shirtless dwarf.

The woman has white hair and a darker skin tone on the left side of her face. Her left eye is green and her right eye is blue.

The dwarf's hair and beard are blond.

The background is a green forest, with some flowers among the tall grass.

(Right) The background is a snow-covered forest, with a pair of dark silhouettes in it, one small and the other large, like a giant. The smaller silhouette is of a young woman walking away and the interior is filled with musical symbols, in green, white and two shades of blue. The larger silhouette is a woman wielding two swords and the interior is full of blood spatter. The larger one appears to be chasing the smaller one.

The following text is laid over the scene:

“I can’t die until Lyra takes her last breath! She’ll regret betraying her sisters!”

“There’s no price I won’t pay to see that happen, no pain I won’t endure and I’d sacrifice the whole world to seal her fate!”
