Ko-Fi sketch reward for @rowyn: Zhenshay & Moon!

I had so much fun portraying Zhenshay's vantablack skin contrasted with Moon's white fur. Less detail is more, sometimes!

You can read more about them here: https://mastodon.art/@rowyn/116596729324198506

Zhenshay is a warlock with vantablack skin, a result of his experiments with potions. He has long horns, bright purple eyes and extremely long, shiny purple hair and a tail with a tuft. He is smiling at the viewer and cuddling his one-eyed white cat, Moon.

Having an abusive assassin for a sister was bad enough, but when Lyra’s older sister, Nicole, becomes obsessed with killing the teenage troll, her life becomes a special kind of nightmare. Will she escape, or become just another victim of the unstoppable woman?

(Left) The cover of Troll Song, by Owen Tyme, Illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

There's a woman in mud spattered white, leather armor crossing a pair of short swords against the neck of a terrified, shirtless dwarf.

The woman has white hair and a darker skin tone on the left side of her face. Her left eye is green and her right eye is blue.

The dwarf's hair and beard are blond.

The background is a green forest, with some flowers among the tall grass.

(Right) The background is a snow-covered forest, with a pair of dark silhouettes in it, one small and the other large, like a giant. The smaller silhouette is of a young woman walking away and the interior is filled with musical symbols, in green, white and two shades of blue. The larger silhouette is a woman wielding two swords and the interior is full of blood spatter. The larger one appears to be chasing the smaller one.

The following text is laid over the scene:

“I can’t die until Lyra takes her last breath! She’ll regret betraying her sisters!”

“There’s no price I won’t pay to see that happen, no pain I won’t endure and I’d sacrifice the whole world to seal her fate!”

The gods are dead. All that’s left are the Players...

The performers of the Playhouse are as worshipped as they are feared, their enchanting shows bending hearts, minds, and even reality itself. Vicious, godlike, lethal. Eighteen-year-old Riven Hesper knows the dangers better than anyone, after her own encounter with a Player resulted in a curse that is slowly killing her.

When the Playhouse announces the spectacle of a lifetime—a chance for one mortal to steal a Player’s immortality—Riven sees her last chance to live. Desperate for answers, she infiltrates the competition. There, she finds Jude, the Playhouse’s brilliant, merciless Lead Player, whose charm is as dangerous as his Craft, and strikes a deadly bargain to save her life.

But with time running out and the Playhouse’s secrets unraveling into a disturbing picture, Riven faces a grim possibility: she might not be the hero of her story after all. In fact, she may be the villain.

Because the Playhouse doesn’t just tell stories. It rewrites them.

And Riven’s might end in blood.

Caraval meets One Dark Window in this lush and dark romantasy.

She’s small and cute, but this half-demon New Yorker lives to exterminate demons, because they murdered her parents. The demonic curse preventing her from saying anything but “it’s a secret” only fuels her desire for revenge.

@bookstodon
#indieauthor #writing #fantasy #actionadventure #fiction #books

(Left) The cover of She Hunts Demons, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

Sitting on the roof of a building in New York City is a teenage girl wearing an old, black dress, fingerless, elbow-length black gloves and a battered, black top hat, with a blue rose attached to the band. The tearing of her clothes hints that she's recently been in a fight. Her hair is short, but messy. Her eyes are blue.

In her hands is a wakizashi, a short sword of Japanese design. The tsuba, or hilt guard, is in the shape of an opening, blue rose. The blade shines blue.

The image is black and white, aside from the details in blue, hinting at film-noir influences in the art.

(Right) An image of a dog with glowing, red eyes, with the following text laid over it:

“Will we ever be safe again?”

“Your people call you traitor, as do mine. Hunted by Heaven and Hell alike, there’s nowhere we could turn for peace.”

“Will our daughter ever know peace?”

“I pray she will.”

With the return of her arch-nemesis to the world in 1972, the Hunter literally goes to war, finding herself drawn to Vietnam, once more backed up by her demon-hunting allies, but as all that faced the horrors of the Vietnam War, she finds her time there trying and emotionally difficult.

(Left) The cover of She Goes to War, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

Three people dressed in tiger-stripe camouflage crouch near the edge of a jungle, in Veitnam. The jungle is a mixture of bamboo and ferns.

The first is a girl with brown hair and blue eyes. She wears a dress, top hat and elbow-length fingerless gloves. She points out of the jungle.

The second is a hispanic man and his skin is covered in greasepaint, to make him blend in even better. He wears a military uniform, including a hat with a round brim and leans on an AK-47 for support. His vest has pouches large enough for spare magazines for his weapon. He looks through a pair of binoculars at what the girl is pointing at.

The third is huge and has the head of a cat, with black fur and green eyes. He wears a military uniform.

(Right) The view from the back of a military cargo plane, with the rear hatch open, in flight, while cargo is dropped for descent via parachute, with the following quote over the top:

“Did you see that?”

“No! I officially *never* saw that crate! I *did not* see the flash of a sword cut the crate apart and *very specifically* didn’t see it explode into a shower of thousands of dinner rolls, with a teenage girl in the middle!”

“Good! I was afraid I was the only one that hadn’t seen that!”

This week's #NewBooks at the library:
- I found a second-hand copy of Voyage of the Basilisk: A Memoir by Lady Trent, written by Marie Brennan (@swan_tower) and published by Tor Books. This is book 3 in a #Fantasy series I have been eyeing up for some time now. I will not lie that the striking covers grabbed my attention.
- Taschen had a sale some time ago, allowing me to finally buy a volume I have long coveted: the collected works of #HRGiger. When it comes to their art collections, I always end up choosing their XXL versions. Expensive? Yes. But it's a "go big or go home" choice for me.
- A lovely birthday gift from a family member: the latest book by the incomparable Dutch biologist Midas Dekkers, Het Menselijk Tekort, published by Atlas Contact.

#Books #Bookstodon #Dragons #HumanEvolution #Anthropology #Scicomm @bookstodon

A photo of three books standing upright on a small, brown, wooden table. The out-of-focus background shows black shelves full of books and part of the beech-coloured laminate floor.

On the left, Voyage of the Basilisk: A Memoir by Lady Trent, showing a white hardback with a colour illustration of a marine dragon swimming in the sea, offering a view of both its neck and head above water, and its body below the waterline. Several other marine critters swim around it for size comparison, including a shark, a humpback whale, and a giant squid.

In the middle, a very large black hardback showing some of HR Giger's disturbing artwork. This is Dark Star, showing a decapitated female head, merging into a stack of skulls, insectoid limbs, and other mechanical and biological parts, all jacked up to a frame via hoses and wires. She is flanked by two figures that consist of columns of unholy amalgamations of skulls, limbs, ribcages, and other unrecognisable body parts. The whole is executed in his signature colour scheme of pallid flesh and dark grey.

On the right, Het Menselijk Tekort, showing a paperback with a colour painting of two mostly naked humans standing on either side of a tree with a snake-human hybrid reaching down with a small branch in his hand. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, eyeing up the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This is the 1592 oil painting De Zondeval, by Dutch Golden Age painter Cornelis Cornelisz.

(Left) The cover of The Third Wish, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

A wizard in a black robe that glitters with hints of gold stands on a mountain and looks down at a city of sky scrapers covered in greenery. In his shadow lurks a creature with glowing red eyes.

In the background, the sun is setting and stars are becoming visible.

(Right Background) Four images separated by black lines, with the silhouette of a woman wielding two swords laid over them. She's outlined in black and her interior is yellow clock-based imagery that spirals outward from the center.

The upper left quarter is a queen in a red, furred robe, wearing a gold and diamond crown. She has dark eyebrows and blond hair.

Upper right is a planet seen from orbit.

Lower left is a symbolic wire frame representation of the view inside a wormhole, in green and yellow.

Lower right is dandelions among grass.

The angle of the planet, one of the woman's swords, the yellow highlights of the wormhole and some of the dandelions form a line that draws the eye along a sweeping curve.

(Right Foreground) The following quote:

He admired the flawless beauty of the insane swordswoman’s fluid movements as Ida took desperate step after step, backwards!

He felt waves of mental energy pour off the panic-stricken troll, but the energy bounced right off of Nicole’s mind, as though she’d shut herself inside a solid, red-hot, steel box of rage!
