I know #Signal is very popular, but at least for me, using NVDA, the desktop client is far less screen reader friendly than the mobile clients. The mobile clients work far better for me, but I honestly don't use my phone for much these days outside of being a media player that can make phone calls, so, as of right now, I'd recommend Delta Chat instead https://delta.chat/en/ #DeltaChat

We are not sure about that 😂 but what we do know is we are soon bringing out releases that we have been working towards for 12 months in multiple already released steps. The funniest thing? Nothing changes on the surface which was precisely what we worked for so long ... more soon, after internal testing and some pending bug fixes land :) and no worries, there will also be interesting visible changes. Deltachat, la messagerie instantanée obtient des trucs cools dans sa dernière mise à jour:
➡️ les messages ne révèlent quasiment aucune metadata
➡️ la visio
➡️ le muli relay: possibilité d'ajouter des relais d'envois de message pour pouvoir continuer à communiquer même si un relai tombe (décentralisation). Par exemple si un état bloque un relai, on switch sur un autre de manière transparente. Très difficile à bloquer et jamais en panne contrairement à WhatsApp/Signal
Et toujours :
➡️ l'inscription la plus facile du monde: littéralement un clic. Pas de numéro de téléphone à fournir, même pas de mot de passe à choisir. Parfait pour les personnes âgées

So yesterday I got my wife Julie to install #DeltaChat so I could test out voice notes, Video calling and so on, Thinking that she'd probably not use it again. Well today to my surprise she sends me a voice not to say that she's going to be late home this morning from her work. I'm very impressed as I didn't expect her to use it again, So that's progress. 😁
Think I'm going to try and persuade Julie my wife to install #DeltaChat and see how she gets on. Also I want to try out voice and video calls privately first before getting adventurous. Baby steps. 😜
I think #SelfHosting is an important skill to learn, for anyone with the aptitude for it. I think the internet can't really be made a better place, until people learn to use those same skills to "staple the internet to real life". Like start from a place in one's real-world existence and look around. There are real-world organizations, and various community groups.
These groups should ideally roll their own self-hosted services: forums, group chats, file-sharing, etc. That's what I mean by "stapling": real world regional orgs aligning to the services they self-host. It's the opposite of using Big Tech forums: the Facebooks, Instagrams, etc of the world, where the platforms can't be trusted, and are totally certain to enshittify. In this way, #DataSovereignty is gained.
Yes, people will need a password manager to manage all those passwords. Or perhaps regional SSO servers - run by a city or province/state - can unify these accounts somewhat. Password management and backing up the password database (eg. .kdbx file) should be taught in school.
People actually visiting over coffee/tea (or meals), are the right time to help someone less technically inclined (in person) to install a new #OpenSource friendly app, like Signal or #DeltaChat
Yes, it won't be easy, *but I don't see an alternative*. There's pretty much no escape from the Tech Bro billionaires otherwise.

I'm curious about what people think is the goto, best, distributed, federated messaging protocol? #XMPP was cool back in the day but I can't really see a way forward with it.
I know #Matrix is a thing and it's the way I'm leaning.
I've also heard of #DeltaChat but don't know anything about it.

I've been recommending people use/try #DeltaChat more than #Signal and it's worked far better than I thought! It's screen reader friendly also, across desktop and mobile! At least, on Windows anyway. https://delta.chat/en/help#multiclient #Chat #Privacy
Reminder: There are no accounts in the classic sense anywhere with #chatmail or #deltachat.
It's all private profiles on end user devices which co-ordinate in a #p2p fashion. Chat profiles *use* email (relay) addresses for transporting messages through a federated e2ee-restricted SMTP network.
A chat profile or chat group has zero data on the server. It's radically different from classic email servers, Whatsapp, Signal, XMPP and Matrix servers which host and control chat identity.

j'ai eu envie de tester #deltachat,j'ai donc fair quelque recherche et j'ai installé le client #arcanechat (j'ai cru que c'était autre chose mais non c'est bien un client deltachat.)
on lance l'application on dit qu'on a pas de compte et paf on a un compte... pas de mot de passe, pas d'identifiant unique, pas de validation par sms, par mail, par captcha... (effet wahou)
on demande quand même un nom/pseudo à présenter aux gens...
bon le souci, c'est que je n'ai personne à qui parler... du coup je demande à ma femme si elle veut bien tester (l'appli est à un un click dans fdroid ou google play).
elle le fait, scan mon qr code et hop on chat...
on note que c'est plus rapide en wifi qu'en 5g mais c'est rapide dans les 2 cas.
j'essaye d'installer une application dans notre conversation (un jeu, je ne sais plus lequel...), je n'y arrive pas, elle teste de son côté et installe #betterlist
Mais elle est super cette app! rien que pour ça arcanechat va rester installé sur nos téléphones !!
(et peut-être remplacer whatsapp ?)

Impressed by how well DeltaChat works nowadays!
I could easily create an account without sharing any details. Connect with a friend's Android based phone & an iPhone. We could videocall & send small apps like a game or a shared list.
Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.
This might be my Signal replacement. Well done @delta
