Just found out about the passing of Marjane Satrapi at only 56. An exceptionally talented woman, and 'Persepolis', arguably her most celebrated work, is proof of why. In those graphic novels she depicted her childhood and early adulthood in Iran and later in Europe, during the Islamic Revolution and its aftermath. A very personal story that stands among the most important works in modern literature, not just within the comic book medium. A masterpiece on the level of Art Spiegelman's 'Maus'.
It shattered stereotypes and introduced western readers to a version of Iran they had never seen, humanising its people without sugarcoating the politics or the systemic oppression, and particularly how it affected the everyday lives of women. An honest, feminist story told through the eyes of a young girl who loved punk rock, who dreamed, and who refused to conform.
If you've never read her work, do yourself a favour and pick up 'Persepolis', or watch the brilliant animated film adaptation, which she co-directed and which took home the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007.
RIP to an absolute legend. 🤘
