A University of Sydney study found that the "net zero hero" narrative in climate action can create feelings of helplessness and disempowerment among individuals.
The study suggests that this narrative unfairly shifts the responsibility of solving the climate crisis onto individuals, minimizing the role of energy industry and policymakers.
The study recommends that storytelling in the energy market should emphasize the role of companies and governments.
This is bad news, obviously, but let’s not pretend things weren’t already terrible. Led by the Biden administration, the US became the world’s #1 producer of fossil fuels.
That’s what you get when short-sighted capitalists take complete ownership of the political system and the government — under both parties.
Now it will just get worse.

More than 17,000 people in Canada’s western Manitoba province were being evacuated on Wednesday as the region experienced its worst start to the wildfire season in years.
“The Manitoba government has declared a province-wide state of emergency due to the wildfire situation,” Manitoba’s premier, Wab Kinew, told a news conference. “This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people’s living memory.”
The climate crisis has made wildfires in Canada more frequent and intense. The country has been hit with devastating fires in recent years, including in 2023, the most destructive on record.
There are now 134 active fires across Canada, including in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Half are considered out of control.

What is a real threat is climate change’ — This U.S. Army vet is calling out the military for being one of the ‘largest emitters’ of carbon emissions.
The potential climate impact of the War on Terror is staggering, according to U.S. Army veteran Erik Edstrom. Edstrom is a West Point graduate, author, and former U.S. Army infantry officer who got out of the military after serving Afghanistan to study climate change and finance at Oxford University. Edstrom says the 20-year-long Afghanistan War contributed enough carbon emissions to kill multitudes of people. His assessment is based on studies such as one published in Nature Communications, which estimated that approx 4,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions is enough to kill one person.
The U.S. Department of Defense is required to report its energy use to the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program. In FY2020, total estimated DoD greenhouse gas emissions based solely on fuel usage data were more than 51 million metric tons of CO2. That figure includes emissions from standard day-to-day operations as well as emissions from non-standard operations such as combat support, law enforcement, emergency response, and spaceflight. Edstrom says there’s more to be concerned with than just operating emissions.
Edstrom says the U.S. Department of Defense budget, which in fiscal year 2021 was more than $703 billion, is bolstered by fear. He thinks Americans’ fears are misguided. Edstrom thinks the future military will be more electric, but says requiring the military-industrial complex to report the full scope of its emissions, beyond just fuel usage, is a crucial step in getting there.

Hey everyone. I jammed some #declarative #lazyEvaluation #engineering #programming to tie into the climate segment of the live show in TWO hours.
Interesting declarative exploratory programming and super simple gnuplotting if I do say so.
But I basically ran out of time to make a good graph with daily temperature max/min/avg from about 1920-2020 in some weather stations in New Zealand. Any ideas??? Clock is ticking
