4.25/5 at The Storygraph for "City of Sin and Splendour:Writings on Lahore". A fascinating & challenging collection of memoirs, histories, poems and short fiction. Of the latter, my two favourites were at the end, "Air Conditioning" by Mohsin Hamid and "The Old Mansion" by Ikramullah Chaudry.
It was also fun to learn that landmarks and at least one thoroughfare in Lahore were, once upon a time, named after a distant relative who served as Viceroy of India.

I just finished Moon over Soho, 2nd book in the Rivers of London series, but my 4th if we're counting prequels and extras...

I was a little disapointed because it seems to lack some of the charm that I've enjoyed in the other books.

It's not bad, I still gave it 3/5 stars, and I'll definitely keep reading the series. I just hope this isn't foreshadowing of even less charm in the future.

"City of Sin and Splendour" is the first non-textbook pbook I've started in ages,. I wanted to read it because my grandfather was born there, but it's been kinda fun to see a name I only recently learned was family (Lawrence) feature often. It's an interesting collection of essays, memories, and poems , but the overriding takeaway always is the incredible brutality of Partition and the permanent scar it left on the psyche of all its victims #History #bookstodon

My overall impression of "The Last Philosopher" was not what I had expected it to be. As previously mentioned, Fantasy is not my go-to genre. So, going into this story, I was not entirely sure what to expect. Was this story going to be as painfully slow as what "The Hobbit" was? Or was this one of those rare times where I actually found myself enjoying a story of the Fantasy genre? I even enjoyed looking at the pictures that were added to each chapter.

"The Last Philosopher" is a story I would recommend to other readers on here to go read and share with their friends, relatives, frenemies, or anyone that could use a good read. Even if you are like me and have a specific genre you are drawn to, I would recommend you give "The Last Philosopher" a try. I found myself to be progressively more interested as the chapters continued. East really does do well with descriptions of chapters without there being much dialogue included.

There are two non-fiction books that haunt me in the pandemic. The first is The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Plague in History (originally subtitled The Epic Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History) by John M. Barry, about the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu pandemic.

It has made me feel particularly Cassandra-like in our own pandemic, because we absolutely know how pandemics work, how to manage them, and what goes wrong when we don't. 1/n
