That black hole is something else.

The Last Philosopher is a ride.
The story starts with a black hole named, wait for it. Di- I mean Richard. And as a black hole should be, he think's hes the absolute center of the universe, able to bring everything to him and underfoot.

Then we are brought to our chrotchity old headmaster of our school.
The story so far has been good with worldbuilding, pictures and maps in the story adding just the right amount of touch and immersion to help visualize wheer you are and what is going on within the chapters.

I found little to no errors in word choice, flow, and spelling. Solid all around.

Five stars:

The Puppets of Spelhorst by Kate DiCamillo and Julie Morstad (Illustrator) (2023) is the first of the Norendy Tales. It's a short, heavily illustrated parable of stepping into the roles given to you while still being true to yourself. The story follows five puppets as they come into the ownership of an old and lonely former ship's captain and then to a family with children.

Audition for the Fox by Martin Cahill (2025) is a fantasy novella with a similar vibe to the Singing Hills Cycle by Nghi Vo. Nesi, a failed acolyte has one last chance to find her calling, if she can convince T’sidaan, the Fox of Tricks to take her on as his apprentice.

finished reading A Court of Thorns and Roses 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
by Sarah Maas.

My first foray into #romantasy. The plot is so-so (humans vs faeries, love & intrigue) but finishes strongly. The romance is weak - it's never clear why she loves the faerie lord, except for his sexy man-beastiness. Hopefully this is not the best the genre has to offer.

I've finished: Lessons in Magic and Disaster by Charlie Jane Anders

I learned something about myself when reading Lessons in Magic and Disaster.

I can read about wars and horrible dystopias and keep my distance. But a book about an LGBTQ family that is suffering from bullying as well as having it's own internal tensions is triggering for me. In 2025 this hits to close to home.

I had to find less stressful moments during the week to open this novel. I'm glad I stuck with it to its magical ending.

I love novels where the main character is researching a subject that illuminates the narrative.

Natural Barn Killer by Amanda Flower and Rachel Dulude (2025) is the fifth Farm to Table mystery. It's Thanksgiving and Shiloh Bellamy is hosting a meal at the farm house. After the meal she finds her chickens standing on an exposed femur, sticking out of the dirt mound by their recently moved coop.

I've finished: Lives of Bitter Rain by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Lives of Bitter Rain starts strong, as we witness Angilly's childhood trauma and see her develop her skills.

But eventually it just becomes a superfluous prequel. We learn nothing new about the world or the characters that wasn't already told or implied in Days of Shattered Faith.

I don't think there's anything here that couldn't be covered by a flashback scene or chapter in the next novel.

I've finished: Anima Rising by Christopher Moore

Christopher Moore is back with a novel that is more appealing to me, despite the very high quantity of crude sexual jokes. (I know it's Moore, but he's laying it very thick here).

I didn't connect with Sacre Bleu or his Noir novels.

Making the book about the models, the disadvantaged rather than the geniouses of the period was a great choice.

I think this will appeal to the fans of the Fool novels more than those of the Pine Cove novels.
