I've finished: Lessons in Magic and Disaster by Charlie Jane Anders

I learned something about myself when reading Lessons in Magic and Disaster.

I can read about wars and horrible dystopias and keep my distance. But a book about an LGBTQ family that is suffering from bullying as well as having it's own internal tensions is triggering for me. In 2025 this hits to close to home.

I had to find less stressful moments during the week to open this novel. I'm glad I stuck with it to its magical ending.

I love novels where the main character is researching a subject that illuminates the narrative.

Natural Barn Killer by Amanda Flower and Rachel Dulude (2025) is the fifth Farm to Table mystery. It's Thanksgiving and Shiloh Bellamy is hosting a meal at the farm house. After the meal she finds her chickens standing on an exposed femur, sticking out of the dirt mound by their recently moved coop.

I've finished: Lives of Bitter Rain by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Lives of Bitter Rain starts strong, as we witness Angilly's childhood trauma and see her develop her skills.

But eventually it just becomes a superfluous prequel. We learn nothing new about the world or the characters that wasn't already told or implied in Days of Shattered Faith.

I don't think there's anything here that couldn't be covered by a flashback scene or chapter in the next novel.

I've finished: Anima Rising by Christopher Moore

Christopher Moore is back with a novel that is more appealing to me, despite the very high quantity of crude sexual jokes. (I know it's Moore, but he's laying it very thick here).

I didn't connect with Sacre Bleu or his Noir novels.

Making the book about the models, the disadvantaged rather than the geniouses of the period was a great choice.

I think this will appeal to the fans of the Fool novels more than those of the Pine Cove novels.

I've finished: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

There's a running gag on r/fantasy, for every book recommendation request someone will find a way to recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl.

I saw it on sale and decided to give it a try.

I don't play RPGs and don't watch reality TV, but after a couple of chapters with too much game mechanics exposition I started enjoying myself.

The humor can be crude and characters can be superficial and annoying. But it's allot of fun and great escapism.

I must admit, I'm hooked and will continue reading DCC.

Three stars:

The Great Panjandrum Himself by Samuel Foote, Randolph Caldecott (Illustrator) (1885) was the inspiration for Edward Gorey's The Object Lesson (1958). It started as a nonsense poem, published in 1775 but is best known for its slightly reworked version with Randolph Caldecott's illustrations. Foote's version was written to be a memory test for actor Charles Macklin who boasted he could recite back anything he'd heard once verbatim.

- I adopted a damaged copy of David Farrier's Nature's Genius: Evolution's Lessons for a Changing Planet, published by @canongatebooks.

The other two are cases of the more I read, the more I go down rabbit holes.
- After reviewing Mysteries of the Deep, I bought an ex-library copy of the classic 1995 Paleoclimate and Evolution, with Emphasis on Human Origins, published by Yale University Press, to read more on the work of Elisabeth Vrba and colleagues (this one came from the holdings of the University Library of Durham)

- After reviewing Every Living Thing, I wanted to know more about Cuvier and tracked down an ex-library copy of the classic 1987 The Cuvier-Geoffroy Debate: French Biology in the Decades Before Darwin, published by Oxford University Press (this one came from the holdings of the University of Saint Katherine Library)

The weather (in the Northern Hemisphere) is getting chilly, so it's a great time to warm up with a Mountain Man!

I’ve written a few thoughts on The Flight of the Maidens by Jane Gardam, 2000, an excellent coming of age story about three girls growing up in post war Yorkshire. One of my favourite romance books out of all the audiobooks I've narrated is Scar by Kelsie Calloway. (I narrated this one as Eden Cavell.)

Scar's a reclusive mountain man who's given up on love. Marilyn's the natural disaster he didn't see coming. When they face an Alaskan avalanche together, she turns his world upside-down!

Scar is a 6'6", rugged Alakan outdoorsman and I am a petite woman. I love that audiobook narration means I got to voice such a gruff, manly character -- who I would never be cast to play in a normal acting situation.

This story is a classic grumpy-sunshine pairing and it's also an Experienced Older Man + Younger Woman age gap romance. It's both sweet and spicy.

There's one particular spicy story element that deserves a content warning (you'll love it or hate it), so I'll put that under a content warning below so you only see the spoiler if you want to.
