(comment on The Stone Sky)
Latest read: Atavists: Stories, by Lydia Millet. I had already read and enjoyed her novels Dinosaur, and The Children's Bible, but I think this has more general appeal, and unlike her novels, you don't have to search for any subtext. It's all laid-out right in front of you. Her criticism of Instagram "reality" is particularly effective.
Millet always examines the problems of society and the climate. This book of linked short stories, is clever, smart, and delivers serious insights and takedowns via unserious characters. I laughed raucously through the first two stories, which had the best lines in the whole book, and then coasted comfortably through the rest. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It was all right. Nothing much to say about it really. I think I would've liked it more had I read it twenty years ago, but somehow it just doesn't feel like what I'm looking for today, though I'd be hard-pressed to explain exactly why. Still, I'll probably pick up more from the series should I happen across them in thrift shops, just as I did with this one.

I’m looking for non-fiction books that make hope for the future. I’m burnt out.
I have done it all, for I don’t know, 30plus years now. From vegan cooking on the streets, protests, sit-ins, urban gardening projects, rural gardening, reforestation, so many things, from big movements to small projects, everything.
For various reasons, not all political, I’m pretty down and feel everything is doomed.
Any books that are more positive, we are making it or at least de could make it?
I would really apppreciate some recommendations. English or German.
Hopeful books about our future

"Ahmed doesn’t merely document the decisions that led President #Biden and his aides to arm and rationalize what leading human rights organizations and legal scholars now consider a genocide. He also illuminates the habits of mind that underlay those decisions — habits that will require a political revolution if the #Democrats want to uproot them."

I'm a fierce LLM critic but I'm getting just as annoyed at all the LLM vigilante detectives in the book space. How about you all do something useful rather than speculating if Daggermouth was generated.
Here's a hint. Read the book. It wasn't.
I know it's not a nine second video clip but I believe in you! You have the power!
In my personal life, I've had people just stop publishing things because an unusual metaphor told someone the thing was generated.
And just LMAO at using LLM detection things. I never take you all seriously that use any form of LLM detection scams.
Every single one of these LLM vigilantes is doing marketing for them. just to fuck with you all, I'm going to use more Em Dashes because you are just as annoying.
It’s not proof–it’s marketing.

My mother called me tonight. She died six years ago, and her number was still saved in my phone.
I watched it ring until the last second before answering. At first, there was only static. Then I heard her voice, weak and hurried.
“Listen carefully. Whatever happens, don’t say your name.”
The call ended.
A few seconds later, someone spoke from the hallway.
“Who are you?”
It sounded exactly like her.
