"White Lies: The Double Life of Walter F. White and America's Darkest Secret – An Investigative Biography of Passing, Lynching, and Civil Rights Activism" by A.J. Baime. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2022.
Book description: An “electrifying” biography of Walter White, a civil rights leader who passed for white in order to investigate racist murders, help put the NAACP on the map, and change the racial identity of America forever. Walter F. White led two lives: one as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance and the NAACP in the early twentieth century; the other as a white newspaperman who covered lynching crimes in the Deep South at the blazing height of racial violence.
I wanted to learn more about him, as his name often comes up in books about the civil rights movement and in books about the NAACP. Well written and very interesting.

📚 Station Eleven by: Emily St. John Mandel
Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
Twenty years later, Ki...

Latest read: Atavists: Stories, by Lydia Millet. I had already read and enjoyed her novels Dinosaur, and The Children's Bible, but I think this has more general appeal, and unlike her novels, you don't have to search for any subtext. It's all laid-out right in front of you. Her criticism of Instagram "reality" is particularly effective.
Millet always examines the problems of society and the climate. This book of linked short stories, is clever, smart, and delivers serious insights and takedowns via unserious characters. I laughed raucously through the first two stories, which had the best lines in the whole book, and then coasted comfortably through the rest. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finally finished reading THE ROUSE, by China Miéville. 5 out of 5 stars. It's clearly evident why it took the author two decades to write.
It's a story that is so different from anything I have ever read, that I swear it began to rewire my brain, and made me progressively more comfortable about thinking in terms of contradictions with mirrored meanings. The novel is dense with references to political movements, history, literature, espionage, the military-industrial complex, economic theory, the social sciences, and every kind of intrigue you can imagine (and some you definitely had not even considered).
There are sentences so well-crafted that you end up re-reading them just to soak them in, even if the meaning is not immediately clear.
Much of the story feels baffling, for most of the time, but at the same time, it's strangely addictive. It's weird, confusing, highly intelligent, and disorienting.
This is the kind of book where on a re-read, you're likely to pick up on so much that you missed the first time through.
