Recommendation for on book about menopause. Hi all, So my wife and I have been told yesterday that the return of her breast cancer is incurable and so the treatment options are all going to involve trying to keep it at bay. As such the first thing that they will be doing is effectively switching off her ovaries and forcing an early menopause. I know barely anything about menopause, what that is going to entail for her both physically and mentally or things to expect. Can anyone recommend any books for me to check out that can explain and help me to understand what she is about to go through with this so that I can better help support her? Page · lemmy.dbzer0.com

Hi all,

So my wife and I have been told yesterday that the return of her breast cancer is incurable and so the treatment options are all going to involve trying to keep it at bay.

*except Amazon, because that special little 800-pound gorilla won’t even *begin* publishing D2D-distributed books until release date, so it’s still working its way through the AI-flooded queue over there.
(And except the Google store, since they're so hard to work with D2D gave up even trying.)

Surrounded by a curlicued black border, Rogue & Vagabond is written in large letters in the centre. Rogue is in a rough newspaper-type font, and a dark-haired smirking man in a brown coat is half-leaning on the E. Vagabond is in an elegant swishy font, the line of the V paralleling the arm of a tall blond man in a burgundy coat. Behind the & is a little gnome, staring out blankly at us.

May 22 is International Sherlock Holmes Day — the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who created the world’s most famous detective.

Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a real physician who could read a patient’s profession, habits, and character from tiny details: a walk, an accent, worn sleeves, mud on shoes.

Doyle later tried to kill Holmes at Reichenbach Falls… but readers refused to let him go.

The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and his mother). Rabih Alameddine.

You, an older, gay, Lebanese high school teacher, who’s been through an awful lot of bad personal and political history, have to figure out how to deal with your toxic mother (and other relatives who historically made your life miserable), so you capitulate to their hetero-normative views of family eventually.

Ebook and paperback: https://books2read.com/StoneProphet

Nicole seeks to collect the missing fragments of the magical city of Kurg from her home world, but the remaining pieces were deactivated and are hard to find. Luckily, she just found the first piece of the Seventh Sage, an ancient stone man that knows the future, which she hopes knows where to find them.

(Left) The cover of Stone Prophet, by Owen Tyme.

At the center is a hexagonal coin with a golden appearance,. That bears a watercolor painting of a woman's face, which drips paint as if it were fresh.

Following the edges of the coin, the background is divided by a spiral of black lines into six images representing vital pieces of the titular stone prophet.

Upper right is an attractive woman with blue eyes and blond hair that's almost white. She stands in place of Memory.

Right is an eye with a blue iris surrounded by blue skin and golden decorations, representing Vision.

Lower right is a hooded woman in darkness, partially illuminated by a purple triangle that magically restrains her. She is Skill.

Lower left is a heart made of and resting in blue sand, with yellow light inside. That shines through cracks, hinting at fragility. This is Emotion.

Left is a gray sphere covered in black zeros and ones. More zeros and ones lay over the top, in blurred white. This is Reason.

Upper Left is a brass statue of justice, wearing a robe and blindfold. She holds a sword and scales. Behind her are the stars of space. This is Heart.

(Right) The same attractive woman from the upper right section of the cover, looking right at the viewer. The following quote frames her face, above and below:

“Does the Leader make the hard choices, or do the hard choices make the Leader?”

“Will she do what must be done, for the good of all?”

"When the World Sleeps: Stories, Words, and Wounds of Palestine" by Francesca Albanese. My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Published in 2026.

Book description: The first woman to serve as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories conveys the soul of a people through ten unforgettable stories of resilience and humanity. The spirit of a place lies in the people who inhabit it, in the stories that intertwine through its streets. And this is especially true of a land like Palestine, the witness to defining historical transitions and stage to one of the most painful chapters in contemporary history.

These stories are compelling and bring out the human experience and trauma. They helped to broaden my understanding. I'm so glad I read this book.

More #fantasy ! It's fair to say I enjoyed Martha Well's Witch King much more than Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, though it is probably also indicative of the development of the genre in the last 20 years. It was surprisingly and pleasantly different from both Well's prior Murderbot Diaries and a lot of standard fantasy fare. Definitely recommend, and I'm putting the next in the series on the list.

Man, the recent Humble Indie Bundles have been contaminated with books about LLMs...

I have wanted to get some books to support good causes, couldn't because I didn't want buy bundles with LLM trash in them.

If only there were a way to remove books from bundles...As I only want the books that support development practices that actively support direct human involvement and passing on those practices to the next generation.

A radical new vision of reality from one of the great minds of our time, mapping a watershed moment in both physics and philosophy.

“Carlo Rovelli is the best thinker out there articulating physics, philosophy, and literature. There simply are no scientists of his caliber who also are humanists of the first order. His prose has the enviable ability to expand the realm of the utterable and, with it, the reach of our intellectual experience.” —Hernan Diaz, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Trust

We are living in an age of scientific advancement on par with that of Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton: a period of discovery that has so fundamentally revolutionized our understanding of the world that it has shaken our most basic assumptions about who we are and our relationship to all things. In On the Equality of All Things, Carlo Rovelli turns his attention to this reckoning, bringing expertise and clarity to both the most mind-bending theories of modern physics and the most fundamental questions imaginable about the nature of time and existence.

Drawing from the latest advances in science and the teachings of modern and ancient philosophers, Rovelli invites us into the universe we thought we knew—one that is not made of things but of relationships. Time is a string of events, and there is no present time in the universe. Cause and effect are an illusion, and reality is an intricate and fragile web. And knowledge itself will always be imperfect, impermanent, and

In the background is a red, orange and white nebula.

In the foreground is a line drawing of a red spotted newt, in white. The lines of the newt are outlined in black, to help it stand out. The interior is red, with an appearance similar to stained glass.

"Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother" by Eve LaPlante. Your rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2012.

Book description: A moving portrait of Louisa May Alcott and her mother, the real “Marmee.” This biography is based on the Alcotts’ intimate diaries and other private papers, some recently discovered in a family attic and others thought to have been destroyed, to revive this remarkable daughter and mother. Abigail May Alcott—long dismissed as a quiet, self-effacing background figure—comes to life as a gifted writer and thinker. A politically active feminist firebrand, she fought for universal civil rights, an end to slavery, and women’s suffrage.

I was totally captivated by this book. Not only does it present a portrait of the characters, but it also paints a vivid picture of the times in which they lived on this earth. My life is richer for having read this book.
