Culturally significant or common household names always found a way into literature but it is the first time I find two mentions of brands so blatantly placed that the only conclusion I’m led to reach is of paid product placement.
The book in question is “The House in the Woods”, by Mark Dawson. In the very first few paragraphs there is a mention to Hello Fresh, with a not so subtle description of the service, along with an admission of a character on how the instructions to prepare a meal are so simple even they can follow it, and a mention to Spotify. Deeper into the book I’ve already noticed a mention of Nescafé instant coffee.
None of these mentioned brands needed to be there. The writer seems proficient enough to be able to write without resorting to such name placements. The story telling is fluid, with a smooth but dense tone to it, which is something I enjoy in crime/drama/mistery novels.
Has this been a thing for a long time and only now I’m noticing the elephant in the room or is this a rising trend?
Everyone needs and deserves to make a living but not like this.
Product placement seems to have found a way into books.

Hi all,
So my wife and I have been told yesterday that the return of her breast cancer is incurable and so the treatment options are all going to involve trying to keep it at bay.
As such the first thing that they will be doing is effectively switching off her ovaries and forcing an early menopause. I know barely anything about menopause, what that is going to entail for her both physically and mentally or things to expect.
Can anyone recommend any books for me to check out that can explain and help me to understand what she is about to go through with this so that I can better help support her?
Recommendation for on book about menopause.

*except Amazon, because that special little 800-pound gorilla won’t even *begin* publishing D2D-distributed books until release date, so it’s still working its way through the AI-flooded queue over there.
(And except the Google store, since they're so hard to work with D2D gave up even trying.)

"1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History--and How It Shattered a Nation" by Andrew Ross Sorkin. My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Published in 2025.
Book description: A New York Times Notable Book of 2025. This book is a narrative of the most infamous stock market crash in history—one with ripple effects that still shape our society today. In 1929, the world watched in shock as the unstoppable Wall Street bull market went into a freefall, wiping out fortunes and igniting a depression that would reshape a generation. But behind the flashing ticker tapes and panicked traders, another drama unfolded—one of visionaries and fraudsters, titans and dreamers, euphoria and ruin. Andrew Ross Sorkin takes readers inside the chaos of the crash, behind the scenes of a raging battle between Wall Street and Washington and the larger-than-life characters whose ambition and naïveté in an endless boom led to disaster. The dizzying highs and brutal lows of this era eerily mirror today’s world. of AI proliferation, and in my opinion, over investment, and a bubble which will one day burst.
This was an excellent read. I highly recommend this book.

May 22 is International Sherlock Holmes Day — the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who created the world’s most famous detective.
Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a real physician who could read a patient’s profession, habits, and character from tiny details: a walk, an accent, worn sleeves, mud on shoes.
Doyle later tried to kill Holmes at Reichenbach Falls… but readers refused to let him go.
