Last one for #SuperbOwl Sunday. Owls (and other Arctic Predators, avian and mammal) use rises and hummocks to scan for prey, using the same spots year after year. Their waste and remains of prey fertilize the spot and the plants grow taller there than the surrounding tundra. As promised earlier today, here's a couple of shots of one of the yellow-headed amazons living in Stuttgart's Rosenstein Park. Their calls sound somewhat human/child-like, which is rather bewildering at first – until you look up and are even more bewildered at the sight of a bright green parrot.

I was woken this morning by two kookaburras making a racket down the side passage. Turns out their beaks were stuck together (!)

While they scrambled and fought, trying to pull apart, a currawong sat on the fence commentating the life-or-death struggle.

After my sleepy brain had made sense of what the bloody hell was going on, I fetched some gloves and gently prised them apart. They both flew off in high dudgeon.

What a surreal start to the day.

Today I finished reading "Turning to Birds: the Power and Beauty of Noticing" by Lili Taylor. This is a collection of essays, each mostly focused on one type of bird. It is a combination of her experiences in both birdwatching and bird conservation and how those activities have changed her. In particular, the essays on migrating and on the chimney swifts were interesting to me, and the bluebird/sparrow one somewhat heartbreaking.
