A recent photo of my sketchbook, still training with ballpoint pen directly, a cruel training. But I am beginning to get a better ability to imagine perspective grids without tracing them, and I can even begin to plan full-page compositions. It takes a while to build these new skills, but they are worth it.

I just found out that I really enjoy combining ball point pen with watercolors.

Pencils are often too light, wash away or bleed. Inks can bleed or can be really "heavy" and dark.

My black ball point pen seems to strike the perfect balance. I will explore some more with this.

The background is white paper and the head is drawn with a black ball point pen with some dynamic strokes.

The skin tones are light, pinks, yellows, reds and a few blue-green accents (especially within the 4 o'clock shadow areas.

The nose and cheeks are reddish. The eyes are dark, recessed and in shadow.

In the lower right of the image, one can see the top of another head peeking in.
