Joe's Barber Shop
It seems like every town that has more than a couple of hundred people has a place like Joes. Joe's is newer than many of the barber shops that I see in these towns but this is fitting for the feel that I was after.
The red, white, and blue barber pole on the outside, the red leather chairs on the inside, old bottles of elixirs and what not set up on the shelf. This is my kind of place.

The path is relatively level -- the trail hasn't started seriously climbing yet -- so you can walk it relatively quickly.

But then again, why hurry? It's pleasant here in the midst of the trees. There's both sunlight and shadow, and the path itself is a bit mysterious, teasing you about where it wants to go.

Another frame in my mental health filmstrip that run through my head in times of stress or as I am trying to fall asleep at night….

A couple years ago, we got snow in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway maintenance crew cleared a stretch of road between gates. I happily went up with my SUV and got photos of (my) lifetime.

Unedited, this was the light that day on the mountain. It was quite cold in the 20s but the view is what took my breath away. In the valley, we don’t often see a lot of snow, not like I’m used to seeing when I lived in Michigan. So this was a treat!

When life feels heavy, I create what I think of as a little filmstrip in my mind as I’m drifting off to sleep. I fill it with images of beautiful or comforting things, letting them take the place of the day’s hurts and tomorrow’s worries.

Here is today’s frame in the filmstrip - a late winter capture from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The layers of light and the depth of field was marvelous!

With nearly every photo I make, I can recall the exact feeling of that moment. Here, it was the stillness of morning, the breathtaking sweep of the mountains, the soft light, and the scent of fresh air—all blending into a moment that eased both heart and soul. For the first time in a long while, I felt like I could truly breathe again, free from the weight I had carried into the mountains in search of refuge.

Hawaiian Sunset

Was fortunate enough to spend some time in Hawaii this year. Something I would recommend everyone do at least once in their life.
We spent most of our time swimming, snorkeling and sightseeing.
I could have sat here all night except that the sun did set and we on to the local watering hole.
Just love all the colors that come through with the light, aqua, deep orange and bright yellows.

Pacific Paradise

I captured this image on the big island of Hawaii at Waikoloa Beach.
We had been body surfing in the ocean all morning getting pounded by waves and burned by the sun. We stopped at a local bar on the beach and met some friends afterwards. We passed this on the way in and I knew I wanted to capture this on the way out. So of course I spent some time and this is the result.

Yes. But it wasn't a smallness of insignificance, as if God had no thought or care for him. Rather, it was a feeling of being small and protected, looked after and sheltered by the Deity for whom this place was built.

Rhine House at Beringer Estates

Beringer Winery became one of the first Wineries in California when it was founded in 1875. Brothers Jacob and Frederick purchased 215 acres of land in the Napa Valley. The first harvest and crush in 1876 producing 40,000 gallons of wine.

Sidewalk Abstract

The San Francisco Embarcadero Center consist of four towers of office buildings that support retail stores on the lower levels. They are positioned right across the street from the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco.
This is a capture of the sidewalk that runs throughout the Embarcadero Center. The pattern is symmetrical and seems to go on forever. I find it slightly hypnotic.
