autism
It’s reassuring to find other parents who are dealing with a similar situation as @Snow and I are with their autistic son.
Our son is 16 years old and has caused significant damage to our home, specifically the drywall, interior doors, kitchen appliances & a window.
The good news is that I’ve gotten pretty good at repairing drywall lol
This is the result of actual autism, not just people on the internet claiming to be autistic.
Defining Autism: The Shadow and the Object
The DSM defines autism by what clinicians can observe. But describing the shadow isn't the same as defining the object.
We know enough to define it. We don't yet know enough to test for it reliably. Conflating the two is a category error — and it has real consequences.

Deficit or difference?
There are a few things about autism that it takes quite a lot of ingenuity to consistently frame them as negative.
I've listed some of them here...

@autistics
There used to be a forum about #Autism called "Wrongplanet". It's been offline for several months now. It had a huge number of interesting threads, all the way back to about 2012.
One of the best threads was a "Megathread", where each #ActuallyAutistic forum member contributed the best boiled-down advice they could muster, for the other Autistic people - **how to understand Neurotypicals**.
It took me days to read it. There was a ton of good advice, which hit me like a ton of bricks. I saved my favorite posts, and made a .pdf out of it; *straight-up copying and pasting* - even leaving grammar errors intact. I made a nice .pdf out of it, formatting it for a phone screen. It's all I have left of that forum to remember it by.
**If you are easily provoked, and are triggered easily by words which you don't think are politically correct, don't read it!!**
If you'd like to read the .pdf, here it is:

Today is both my birthday and #Neurodiversity Pride Day (which I just discovered has always been on my birthday).
I'm not much of a pride day advocacy person in general, BUT if any of my posts on #autism have been useful to you, sharing one (and commenting why you chose it) would be a lovely gift to support autism awareness.

From my favourite place by and for late diagnosed/realized autists.
It’s a very long piece, and be aware that you are probably going to see yourself in some parts of it. If yes I feel you, and it is so weird to read a big part/component of my reality so well described!
Some advice at the end of the text on how to try to learn to unlearn. I tried with a few health professionals in my life forced by the reality of my rare genetic mutation and thankfully it works.
Please add the @ autistics group in the comments, I can’t from my new instance.

Learned Helplessness in Autism: Why You Stopped Asking for What You Need
You are not low maintenance. You are someone who learned, early and repeatedly, that asking did not work, so you stopped asking and called it independence.

A few years ago, I realized my wife's condition had something in common with #autism and I thought I'd make a comic strip about it, to help understand both.
She has demyelination: her nervous system doesn't automatically coordinate her movements the way most people's does. Every step is conscious, planned. And some signals still arrive too late, no matter how much practice.
With autism, social and emotional signals don't get pre-filtered before reaching conscious awareness. What most people process automatically, we process deliberately, with a similar risk of arriving too late.

♾️Ten reasons why I like being autistic♾️
Maybe surprisingly to some, being autistic isn't all bad.
Here are some things that may get missed when autism is defined *only* through our difficulties & struggles.

How our family spends an evening, everyone taking the RAADS-R (autism inventory!) and then comparing scores. We did this last night and it was kind of a blast, honestly. :)

And then if that's fun, you can take the CAT-Q to see how much you mask/camouflage.

That one in particular was extremely disconcerting. I couldn't stop the nervous laughter as I was taking it, and Jupes would want me to read off all the ones that creeped me out. I had to keep reminding myself, "they study this now, it's not weird that this website knows every secret thing that's going on in your head in every live social situation".
Edited because Jupes read this and said: "You should add that I had a higher score than you on the RAADS-R, so I beat you at autism." This is true. But if we all take an ADHD inventory, I'm wiping the floor with both of them. 😄
When neurotypical people read someone's expression, it happens automatically: parallel processing, fast, effortless. Like a GPU rendering a scene.
When an autistic brain does it, I run a different process: observe, decode, match, select, output. Sequential, non-automatic, constructed from scratch.
The result looks similar, but the cost doesn't.
This is why masking is exhausting: not because autistic people are bad at social interaction, but because they're running a CPU process where everyone else has a GPU. Same output. Different architecture.

For months I've been publishing essays on late-diagnosed autism. You already see the titles here. I've opened a newsletter for those who also want to follow the theoretical research (preprints on Zenodo, open access) and the second book in progress.

For those of you who may be interested.
After ten days of staring intently at the letterbox. Our noble hero's motionless vigil was finally rewarded, as the blue badge of parking happiness finally arrived on his doormat. Slowly he creaked into life and bent down to pick it up. Dislodging no small amount of dust, several spiders, who had taken his stillness as a gift from their web making Gods and one somewhat confused pigeon, who had perched on his head, thinking he was a statue. (Because, no matter how impossible, or improbable, there is always one.)
OK, perhaps it didn't happen quite like that. But, finally, religiously looking for and checking to see if it had arrived yet, has paid off and I can stop worrying about whether the various emails telling me that it was going to arrive, were actually some sort of mistake and that it was never going to. No, now I can start worrying instead, that getting one at all is some sort of blunder and I will be getting a demand soon for it to be returned.
For which the only thing I can say is, why, brain, why?
Brain: Because it is how I roll. Clearly from past experience, it is a possibility.
Despite the fact that something like this, hasn't happened, far more times than it has.
Brain: Question not, how the system operates. Oh, and have a side order of, suddenly being confronted by the confirmation of how much more disabled you are now, and likely to stay that way, than you were before Christmas and having to come to terms with that too.
Damn! Stupid contradictory brain, just one of them would have been enough. 😒
Works of course also for self diagnosis/realization!
“Autistic rest is the recovery your nervous system needs after the constant work of navigating a world built for a different kind of brain. For many late-diagnosed autistic adults, rest has become something you believe you have to earn through productivity, because masking taught you that your worth is measured in output. It is not. Rest is not a reward you unlock by finishing the list. It is a basic need, and your need for it is higher than most people around you, not lower.“
