Self-Portrait with a Red Pencil by Léon Spilliaert, 1908.

During his youth, Spilliaert painted a series of self-portraits. Initially, these were simple representations of his appearance, but later they evolved into complex images in which reality, reflection, and fantasy merge.

In Self-Portrait with Red Pencil, he depicted himself as a black silhouette with dark-rimmed eyes. He holds a red pencil in his hand with determination. He is in a room in his parents' house, bathed in nighttime light, wearing a dark suit with a stiff collar, which he often wore. Everyone who met Spilliaert at that time was struck by his appearance, which betrayed his tormented, restless soul.

Colored pencil sketch playing with color on toned paper! This medium requires a lot of patience and tons of layers of colors. Was a challenge to make the colors pop with the toned grey paper, I was going for a luminous look!

John Singer Sargent's painting Portrait of Madame X was controversial when it was first unveiled.

There is an assertion and showiness in the expanse of white skin – from her high forehead down her graceful neck, shoulders, and arms. Although the black of her dress is bold, it is also deep, recessive and mysterious.

She is surrounded by a rich brown which is at once luminous and dark enough to provide contrast to the skin tones. Most disconcerting is the whiteness of the skin, an overt contrivance of "aristocratic pallor"; by contrast her red ear is a jarring reminder of the color of flesh unadorned.

"This painting – an evocation of light, space, soaring architecture and ordered elegance – shows the inside of the Buurkerk in Utrecht. Several Dutch artists of the time specialised in painting church interiors, but Saenredam was particularly innovative. He exaggerated for effect: here he has stretched the height of the columns, creating a feeling of loftiness and allowing sunlight to flood the building.

The Buurkerk was not a contemporary building; it was constructed between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. But it had recently been remodelled in the new, unadorned Protestant aesthetic, and Saenredam celebrates this transformation. The walls, once multicoloured, have been whitewashed, and the altarpieces removed.

There are nods to other religious themes, too.
