Contrasting Byzantine and Indian architecture:

The Hagia Sophia consists of a cube surmounted by a dome, representing earth and heaven, the totality of the observable universe (p. 264).

In Indian architectural science, or Vastu Vidya, the earth is round and the circle is the primal form. The metaphysical, absolute order of the Brahma is manifest as a square (p. 227).

Why are the assignation of physical and metaphysical order to the circle and square reversed between different schools of thought?

Note that this is not really a question of "West vs. East" per se, - China, notably, sees the heaven as round and the earth as a stable cube, consistent with the Hagia Sophia's construction (p. 231).
