Seven plates of heirloom seeds on a kitchen top will be moved to the windowsill to dry. The top row of three plates have a black bean called noir bush , some woad seeds, next to Jacob’s cattle gold bush bean which are gold and white in colour. The middle two plates are Latvian peas which are a lighter brown and Carlin peas a darker brown colour. The plate on the front left contains mostly a brown bean called bonne bouche with a dozen black and white ying yang beans, only two Madeira maroon beans and a dozen chickpeas. The last plate contains purple and white Jacob’s cattle bush beans.

The compost area on the plot. The compost in the bays will be turned into the daleks to mature. More compost from elsewhere on the plot can then be added to the bays. #Compost #Composting #Mulch #Gardening #Allotment #NoDig

Four pallets and an old section of wooden fence make up two bays for storing compost. One bay is about a third full and the other is two thirds full of homemade compost. Three plastic daleks of compost line the other side of the fence section. One dalek has its lid off to reveal a full container of maturing compost. A 20 year old wheelbarrow and two planters of carrots are in front of the compost bays. One of the plot robins is standing on the back pallet seeing if there are any worms to be had.

Even a small pond is worthwhile. There’s been so much insect life in and around this little pond that was put in earlier this year. Spiders, hoverflies, flies, solitary bees, newts, frogs. #Pond #Ponds #Biodiversity #Gardening #Allotment

A small container pond with green algae and various pond plants flag iris, brooklime, bog bean, lesser spearwort, hornwort and water violet. There’s a gentle slope of stones down from one end towards the middle. The pond is surrounded by various flowers. Orange marigolds, white alyssum, borage that’s gone over, pink cosmos and some purple bowles mauve.

Front of an allotment plot with two compost heaps. One is freshly built and green. The other is older, smaller and a darker brown. Behind the compost piles a rhubarb plant is starting to wilt. Huauzontle Aztec broccoli leaves have gone pink and a tree spinach is setting seed. A rudimentary fence has been set up on the other side of the plot to protect autumn sown crops from the muntjac.

Two compost bays with maturing compost in both. One pile is finer quality than the other. Two planters of carrots are in front of one of the bays. Bamboo canes stand upright in the pallets that divide the two bays. An old garden fence divides the second compost bay from various compost daleks. There are six in total, not all in view. Two contain wood chip, one has maturing compost for next years potting mix, two have fresh veg scraps, one contains sawdust. Behind the compost bays is a dead hedge of sorts and a hedge lined boundary of a nature reserve.

Two growing beds on an allotment are separated by sawdust and wood chip pathways. Some windfall apples lie scattered on the plot next door. A green manure mix on the beds is slowly growing to feed the soil life until all but the rye grass will be killed off by the winter frosts. Low growing white alyssum flowers line the edge of the beds. One bed is partly protected by a black metal fence.

View along a grassed pathway that divides an allotment plot on one side with a trained wild blackberry in need of pruning and a boundary hedge on the other. The common hawthorn in the hedge is yellowing while the guelder rose has already mostly turned red. Other species contained in this hedge are hornbeam, dog rose, field maple, dog wood, lime, wild cherry, wayfaring tree, lime, willow and hazel.

Nice autumn day for some plot r&r. #Gardening #Allotment #NoDig

An allotment plot with a chain link fenced bed sown with green manures in the front, a border currently with raspberries and white alyssum will have yarrow and daisies in there next year. A glorious red guelder rose is showing off it’s autumn colour in the boundary hedge line of trees. The red colour is mimicked on the plot by the Aztec broccoli. A blue shed is way down in the bottom corner of the plot. Broad beans or field beans will be grown over winter in the fenced bed.

The back third of an allotment plot has two growing beds sown with green manure and two raspberry beds with a wood chip mulch. In the far corner is a blue shed open to the elements with no fitted windows. It is full of allotment paraphernalia that needs sorting out. Compost bays with bamboo canes stacked upright have carrot tubs protected with wire mesh in front. The trees beyond are slowly losing their foliage.

A framed growing bed is covered with wire mesh to keep the worst of the wildlife out. It needs weeding but the field beans inside are just starting to show. A light pink and a darker pink cosmos are flowering on the outside corner of the bed. The rest of the next growing bed is sown to green manures and the last throes of some french marigolds.

A curved growing bed protected with some green chain link fence has green manures growing inside with mustard being the dominant plant. There are broad beans, winter peas, vetch and clovers sown here also. The re are frosts forecast over the next week which will knock back most of this growth to enable the beans and peas to come through.

Bit of a grim old day, if not as wet as forecast.

Wandered down to the butcher earlier on and picked up some chicken thighs, bacon (smoked streaky), and 2.5kg of diced venison (at £8.80/kg cheaper than the stewing beef I had intended to buy). The venison will go with 800g of "yellow sticker" mushrooms we found in Tesco for 64p to be a big batch cook for the weekend.

Main job for the afternoon has been peeling all of what I consider to be our "C grade garlic". A job I've been putting off, but now I have noticed they're sprouting so it needs doing.

The garlic will be going into the food processor with some oil and then get frozen as "garlic cubes".

I'm only half way through but my right thumb is already hurtin'!

Bumblebees are on the blackberries and the sambucus nigra is showing off. #Gardening #Allotment #Bees #Pollinators #GrowYourOwn

A white tailed bumblebee with a yellow band on its abdomen and thorax is finding a lot to love about the wild blackberry flowers. The white flowers are on show with lots more flower buds getting ready to open.

A blue shed in the background is partially hidden by a plum tree. A burgundy coloured sambucus nigra elder stands out against the green foliage of trees behind it. Its lighter coloured wide flower heads are clearly showing. Comfrey plants dominate the foreground underneath.

The pond on the allotment. #Gardening #Allotment

A small container pond on an allotment with some slates and stones around the edge. An iris is protruding upwards from the pond. The water level is low and needs topping up but rainwater is a sought after commodity here at the moment. The water surface is covered in small green leaves from the pond plants. The outside of the pond has been planted up with some white flowering alyssum, purple lobelia and red and yellow french marigolds. Yet to flower is some borage, common oregano and cosmos. The pond is partly surrounded with a wood chip mulch.

It’s been six months since taking on the back half and three and a half months for the front half. Then to now photo comparison taken from the same spot. #Allotment #NoDig

An overgrown allotment plot in mid November. Yellowed leaves of raspberries dot around the front dominated with green fresh growing grass or the dead brown variety. In the distance the brown shed can be seen with its black square window. A sprawling blackberry bramble is halfway down.

Same plot, in mid May. The ground has been cleared of undergrowth and largely mulched. Raspberry canes are in full leaf and bumblebees, honey bees and solutary bees are visiting often. Various bamboo cane structures are up to support climbing plants. A wood chipped central path follows past the blackberry now trained to posts and wires and down to a just visible extended blue shed. An orange bucket indicates where a container small pond is located. The only thing that’s been cropped from this plot so far has been an out of picture rhubarb but there will be lots of harvests to come.

Five pallets form three rudimentary bays on an allotment plot. The first bay is full of water butts and bags of wood chip. The other two bays contain compost. Two planters made from an old water butt are also filled with sieved compost and stand in front of one of the compost bays.

I finally got around to moving the compost pile for the first time in 6 weeks. I started making this compost in December and it’s looking pretty nice. It will make a good mulching compost for some of the beds next spring.

The hot compost has hit the red zone so🤞will continue to stay above 55°C for two more days when it will be turned again. #Compost #Composting #Mulch #GrowYourOwn #Gardening #Allotment

Two piles of home made compost either side of a plum tree on an allotment plot. Beyond the tree is a mini wall of comfrey which will be cut once it has stopped flowering. A selection of lidded dustbins are being used to store tapped water and allow it to chlorinate off. A wheelbarrow is next to the bins. The plot is surrounded by greenery. Trees and a hedge are to one side with trees in the distance. The compost piles are in the shady side of the plot. Sunshine hits the other side.

A compost thermometer is in the red zone marked hot. The temperature is almost hitting 58°C. Grass and wood shavings make up the outer layer of the compost pile which the thermometer has been placed into.
