I made a list of websites that offer royalty-free, human-made images for your blogs and social media posts. I’ll keep the list updated over time.
Use these images instead of #AISlop! No more excuses!
Please reply with additional sites and I’ll add them to the list.
so i have questions about #Debian:
1. are members ONLY developers?
2. only developers argued for/against #LLM #AI?
devs are the last people who should be involved in discussions about the ethics and legality of software. ie:
just reckoned, when a court recently decided you can't claim #copyright on #aislop, it didn't occur to me it means both closed and open copyright.
so, if using #LLMs trained on works stolen or added without consent removes any claims of #FLOSS: what is Debian now?
META’S REAL AI WAS HIDING
IN PLAIN SIGHT. 💎
I watched a video this morning called 'The (Overdue) Collapse of Meta,' expecting another story about a giant technology company finally coming unstuck.
BUT THAT REALLY WASN'T THE STORY.
Meta is still making extraordinary amounts of money.
The metaverse was a spectacular failure. Zuckerberg renamed the company around it, talked about a billion people eventually inhabiting virtual worlds, and poured tens of billions of dollars into trying to make it happen.
PEOPLE MOSTLY DIDN'T COME.
But while everyone was laughing at cartoon legs and expensive headsets, something else inside Meta was working extraordinarily well.
THE ADVERTISING MACHINE
For more than a decade, Meta has been using AI to learn from the tiny signals produced by billions of human brains. What we stop to look at. What we click. What we ignore. What keeps us scrolling?
WHAT WE ARE ABOUT TO BUY
And increasingly, what we might be about to do. That system became astonishingly good at turning human behaviour into advertising revenue. Which changes the story rather dramatically.
META DIDN'T FAIL TO BUILD POWERFUL AI.
It was built years ago. It just wasn't sitting there chatting pleasantly to us. It was behind Facebook and Instagram, watching behaviour and learning how to predict it.
And the enormous advertising business generated by that machinery is now helping to finance Meta's next gigantic gamble: superintelligence, data centres, researchers, and infrastructure costing tens of billions of dollars.
There is something almost perfect about that. The metaverse failed because people didn't particularly want what Meta was selling. The advertising machine succeeded because we WERE what Meta was selling. And perhaps that is the part worth paying attention to.
Because sometimes the most important question about technology isn't:
DID IT WORK?
It is:
WHAT DID IT LEARN TO DO TO US?

There was a sense in the Inkscape project that it should be the developer team that decided what the AI policy should be.
I flatty rejected this.
Because most of the consequences for the project, for our users and for the world have absolutely nothing to do with developing software. It's reputation, risk, relationships and community standards and morality.
The last thing I wanted was important decisions to be pre-narrowed to questions of technical usefulness.
I will never understand how the project that respected licenses and trademarks so much that they forked the entire #Mozilla stack to comply ever decided that #AI usage could ever be considered ethical.
I have many machines that are somehow related to @pidgin's development and the vast majority of them run #debian. To keep #AI out of #Pidgin, I now I need to find a new distribution. This is yet another example of me having to pay into the #AI time deficit. 🙄

Generative AI is a machine which immediately eats any human creativity we might dare come up with, so that it can be sold back to us by tech oligarchs.
There is no "responsible" use of this. It is an enclosure of knowledge and a massive power grab. One of the most disgusting uses of technology outside of warfare (but it's used there too!). If you feel like it's helping you write code or whatever... in the end, it really isn't. It's helping the tech oligarchs monopolize OSS. 1/3

I WILL NOT BE BULLIED 💎
I received a vicious reply today because I use AI. It wasn't a disagreement. Nor a criticism. It was a full-frontal personal attack! And I’ll admit it affected me more than I expected.
I USE AI MAINLY BECAUSE I'M PARALYSED.
Typing is physically difficult for me. I have the use of only one hand. So, tapping out a post or email with one finger is exhausting. Voice and AI help me turn my own thoughts into usable writing in a normal amount of time.
THAT SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A DEFENCE.
You can dislike AI. You can distrust it. You can argue about copyright concerns, energy and water use, labour, culture, or anything else that concerns you. I will listen to you and answer you.
But attacking people simply for using AI is not principled.
IT'S BULLYING.
And disabled people should not have to produce a medical justification every time they use a technology that makes their life easier.
AI is a tool. How it is used matters. Who gets harmed matters. Context matters. What does not help is turning “AI user” into a moral accusation and deciding that cruelty is suddenly acceptable.
I’m quite happy to discuss the technology with anyone.
HOWEVER, I WILL NOT BE BULLIED FOR USING IT.
I didn't need to do anything about the attack. Before I could even decide how to respond, both the post and the person disappeared from my notifications.

Anyone else out there no longer hearing much from your circle (family, friends, associates) because AI has replaced your presence in their lives? (Meaning, they no longer need to contact you because AI is their new companion/confidante/problem solver/emotional security blanket/pseudo romantic partner, etc?)

Many of us are expecting some sort of AI-related 'correction' (crisis) in financial markets & not for the first time Andrew Bailey (Governor of the Bank of England) has expressed similar thoughts.
Now I haven't changed my mind but I am reminded of the famous John Maynard Keynes observation that:
'Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent'...
which seems to be about where we are, right now as the cost of living crisis continues..

Anti-AI comments should demonstrate that their human authors are inarguably superior to artificial intelligence.
Any comment that fails this basic test is, naturally:

WHO WILL DECIDE OUR
GLOBAL FUTURE NEXT? 💎
I watched the recent Four Corners documentary:
The AI takeover: Who controls our future?
What stayed with me was not whether AI will become smarter than us. It was:
WHO GETS TO DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
A handful of companies are building systems that are reshaping work, education, politics, medicine and our everyday life. The benefits could be enormous. So could the damage. And we have been here before.
WE DID THE SAME WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.
When social media was new, we were dazzled by connection and largely let the companies building it make the rules. By the time we understood the consequences, those platforms were already embedded in our friendships, childhood, our news, and our politics.
NOW WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN WITH AI.
Except this time, we cannot say we haven't been warned. The people building these systems openly acknowledge the serious risks, yet the industry resists rules that might limit its freedom to build. Australia even considered mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI. Those plans were dropped.
HAVEN'T WE LEARNED ANYTHING?
I use AI. I see enormous value in it. This is not an argument against AI. It is an argument against handing extraordinary power to a handful of companies and sorting out the consequences later.
AI may become one of the most consequential technologies we have ever created. Surely that means more democratic oversight, not less.
The real question isn't: Will AI take over?
It is:
WHO ARE WE ALLOWING TO TAKE CONTROL OF AI AND THUS OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE?

"TL;DR
Four minutes is how long it took for a machine inside a Fortune 500 company to execute code we published. Two more within the hour. We didn’t exploit a CVE, phish an employee, or touch a perimeter. We registered destinations that official, HTTPS-served files — published by the companies themselves — were already telling AI agents to use."
From what I can gather, it's a free-for-all now, with AI opening up all the doors. Our Data has never been in more risk

It's come to this!
I've just boosted a post about a book entitled "The High Road", by Ken Lussey. The author's website includes the logo shown below.
To think, I'm living in a time when human creativity has to be positively identified as such.
Will we have to move to a situation where we have certificating authorities to confirm things are human made, rather like The Soil Association does for organic produce? I think that will become necessary.

iPeople & Mapua Set Ambitious ...
I'm going on two months of using Proton's Lumo as my primary AI and honestly, I'm not looking back.
Before this, Perplexity was my main AI because I found its answers to be particularly helpful on technical subjects. It sources things very well and tends to have the best overall answers with technical topics. However, it's a Big Tech AI service: it's inherently horrible for privacy. While my Perplexity account is pseudonymous and I only ever use it for things like troubleshooting and research, it's still not good for privacy.
Before I decided to give Lumo a proper try, I had been using Venice AI. It's a privacy-respecting AI service with end-to-end encryption options and uncensored options. At its core, it's a solid service itself, but the main problem with it is that it has severe restrictions on free users: only ten text queries allowed per day. That's an absurdly low cap. Worse still, their lowest plan is $18/month. I use AI a fair amount but not enough to justify an $18/month subscription plan.
When Lumo was first launched, I found it to be pretty useless. It hallucinated constantly, the UI/UX was barebones, it just wasn't a great experience. However, when Lumo 2.0 dropped, things changed. Now, it feels nearly on par with Perplexity in terms of information and sourcing, and the UI/UX is actually excellent now. I find it to be very rare that I ever have to use a different AI, even with their free plan restrictions, and I'm even to the point where I'm considering subscribing precisely because I don't feel like I'm exploited as a free user. Their subscription is ~$10/month, by the way: significantly cheaper than just about every other AI option out there, as even the cheapest alternatives are still heavily restricted.
The fact that an end-to-end encrypted, privacy-respecting option is now truly competitive is amazing news because I love the benefits of AI, I'm just not keen on the ways it can be used against us.
