With Star Trek having narrowly avoided cancellation, the basic format remained the same as Season 2. The season opened with "Spock's Brain". Season three also includes "The Tholian Web", where Kirk is trapped between two universes; this episode would be revisited in the 2005 two-part episode "In a Mirror, Darkly" from the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise. The series' final episode, "Turnabout Intruder", aired on June 3, 1969, but Star Trek would eventually return to television in animated form when Star Trek: The Animated Series premiered in September 1973.
