OMG.
Get it right, Dems.
Our leader has spoken.
He has taken the first courageous, high-risk step.
But he has taken the correct one.
God bless him, and God bless America.
Wow that is a surprise. I didn’t think he’d drop out, but he did.

For the 1st time I'm seeing follow requests from newly-created, shady-looking accounts. 1 was pre-blocked by my instance, the other was clearly anti-Harris.
I'm not American & rarely post about #USPol, so this is a waste of everyone's time. For the avoidance of doubt, if I had a vote it would never be for the #GOP
Friendly advice: go outside, reconnect with #nature, do something constructive to help people or planet, read a book
Rally around #KamalaHarris
#Biden moments away from addressing the nation on his decision to stand down from the 2024 #election.
If you think he has earned a beer for ~50 years of public service, donate $5 to help elect VP #Harris (and show #Mastodon is worth looking at)!
Or, you know, a six-pack for $30. 😇
@heidilifeldman has started this #MastodonForHarris ActBlue fundraiser and it is blowing past expectations, approaching $200,000 as we speak!

One of my favorite Trump statements ever - btw this guy was today in all seriousness interviewed by #Musk about educational policy...

I've written a longish take on the last couple of days, including about how what looked like (and initially was) Democratic panic over Biden morphed somewhere along the way into a rope-a-dope strategy against the GOP, and whether Harris can win (spoiler: yup):
https://whatever.scalzi.com/2024/07/22/biden-harris-trump-and-2024/
Every time I've seen/heard about the Trumpwits' panicky reactions to Kamala Harris being the presumptive nom, I've thought about this meme. No idea who made it, but it's perfect.
One of the most discouraging things I've observed in a lifetime of studying American media, is the way corporate news outlets have reacted to the objectively fascist takeover aspect of Project 2025 by focusing on the fact that it's a cluster of "bad ideas" rather than the obvious reality that it's a plan to transform America into a Christian Nationalist dictatorship by force. If big network journalists were doing their jobs properly, I wouldn't have to share a 10 minute undercover sting operation by the Center for Climate Reporting published on YouTube here with you, but they aren't, and so I do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY_chqyaRHo
The context here is that two journalist working for CCR went undercover, posing as donors, to meet Micah Meadowcroft (one of the authors of Project 2025) and Russel Vought (former Trump admin Director of the Office of Budget and Management) to talk to them about Project 2025. Using hidden cameras, they easily got these two fascist muppets to more or less openly admit:
- Project 2025 is a plan to establish an expressly Christian Nationalist dictatorship under Trump.
- they intend to use the US military against anyone who protests the project
- what's available in the public is only the broad outline, they're secretly working on the exact executive orders and policy initiatives necessary to make this fascist shit a reality if Trump is elected; and fast.,
- they're actively keeping this second phase of the project a secret to avoid FOIA requests that would *actually* expose their plans.
- Trump's disavowals of Project 2025 are meaningless electioneering; he's still on board, as is JD Vance and the other Trumworld muppets involved.
The astounding part here is how easily the undercover reporters were able to coax this information out of Meadowcroft and Vought, and the fact that this is being done by a nonprofit investigative journalism organization whose YouTube channel has less than a thousand subscribers tells you all you need to know about how hard (or not) the American media is actually pursuing this story. This is literal fundie fascist dictatorship shit of the kind that could get people tossed in jail if this were a functioning democracy; which sadly, America really isn't - especially post-Citizens United.
I strongly recommend you watch this video, it's worth every moment of the 10 minutes it'll take you to do so.
Also, hat tip to @blogdiva who shared this early today, and without whom I would definitely never have seen this.

Simone Biles, please forward a G.O.A.T necklace to the Naval Observatory, care of Future Madame President Harris.
She just nailed the landing of a lifetime.
In case the historic nature of of this moment, is lost on you...
A timeline of American Vice Presidents. Until the red square, she would have been a slave. Until the blue square she would have gone to segregated schools (if at all). Up to the yellow square she was not allowed to vote. It wasn't until the green square she could have her own bank account. Now she is Vice President, and on November 5th she will be elected President of the United States. #KamalaHarris #election2024 #USpol

“JD Vance is making history as the least liked VP nominee (non-incumbent) since 1980 following his/her party's convention. He's the first to have a net negative favorable rating.
Not surprising given how weak he ran in Ohio in 2022. Far worse than the average Ohio Republican.” @ ForcasterEnten

“Thousands of Black men joined a virtual conference Monday night to fundraise for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign…more than 53,000 attendees helped raise more than $1.3 million in four hours for Harris…The massive turnout helped dispel toxic myths about Black men’s willingness to back a woman candidate.” #uspol

Over the past twelve or so years that I've spent exposing the "mainstream" American right's mask off "transformation" into an overtly (instead of covertly) fascist movement, I cannot tell you how many times reactionary apologists have attempted to counter my fact-based analysis by screeching that "you can't just call half of Americans nazis!" Despite the fact that this argument is entirely off topic and based in the realm of feelings, I always push back on it because the plain numerical truth is that it's certainly not "half" of the American population that supports fascism and the new American Nazi Party.
Say whatever you will about the reactionary nature of American thought and politics, and believe me I've said plenty, the objective reality is that support for the Republican Party in the United States isn't anywhere near fifty percent. In fact, most modern analysis of political positions in the U.S. electorate strongly indicates that if everyone, and in particular every non-white American, actually got to vote in U.S. elections, the GOP might not win another national election in my lifetime. Furthermore, I know that the fascists in American politics know this, which is why they've spent at least the past thirty years stacking the judiciary with unhinged reactionary judges dedicated to dismantling the Voting Rights Act by any means they are able to.
Given these realities, it shouldn't surprise you to learn that last week Republican-appointed members of the federal judiciary once again took steps to attack voting rights in the lead up to the 2024 U.S. Presidential election:

As the Voting Rights Act Nears 60, Conservative Judges Are Gutting It From Every Angle
"On Thursday, the ultra-conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overruled two previous court decisions and reinstated a county commissioners’ map in Galveston, Texas, that eliminated the only majority-minority district, ousting the lone Black and minority commissioner. In a 12-6 decision, with all of the Republican-appointed judges in the majority, the appeals court overturned its own precedent dating back to 1988, ruling that minority groups who form a combined majority, such as Black and Hispanic voters in the Galveston area, are not protected under the VRA. That will make it much tougher to secure representation for communities of color, since different minority groups often combine to form a majority in an increasingly diversifying country. “Today, the majority finally dismantled the effectiveness of the Voting Rights Act in this circuit,” Judge Dana Douglas wrote in a dissent."
Look, I'm not an electoralist, and I've told you all countless times that I don't believe you can actually vote out fascism in a country that has been embracing fascist ideology since before we even had a word for such, let alone the capitalist order that controls our politics and threatens all life on our shared biosphere. With that having been noted however, voting rights are foundational to what passes for our democracy and it sure does say a lot about the anti-democratic nature of a political party when that party's only path to victory and continued relevance depends on restricting the right to vote along demographic lines that objectively reflect the white supremacist inclinations of said party. Voting out Republicans is not a panacea for solving all of the problems we're facing in a capitalist country built on genocidal land theft and actual fucking chattel slavery, but I'm absolutely certain that our collective struggle for justice, equality, and sustainability in America would be easier if goddamn nazis in judge's robes weren't allowed to dictate who gets to have a say in politics in order to force minority rule by fascists on us all.
Just part of Lawrence O’Donnell’s opening tonight on The #LastWord. He lacerated Trump and the U.S. corporate news media and its lackey Trump sycophantic reporters. Shades of Peter Finch in “Network”—this is the kind of thing more people need to do. Roland Martin does this often.
