In a three-day trial in 1995, Anthony Boyd was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, based solely on the word of a co-defendant who testified under the threat of capital punishment. No physical evidence connected him to the murder of Gregory "New York" Huguley. Boyd has been on death row ever since, and is due to be executed by the state of Alabama on Oct. 23. @bolts examines the reasons to doubt the conviction: Inadequate legal representation, conflicting witness reports, and a system that disproportionately sends Black people to death row.

Mario Guevara, the only known journalist detained by ICE on U. S. soil, has been held since June 14. For The Bitter Southerner, he writes about his experiences of solitary confinement, protection rackets, and ICE's attempts to prevent his release. "Since July 10, 2025, all pending criminal charges against Guevara have been dismissed, yet he remains in detention. Guevara has committed no crime, had no criminal history prior to his June 14, 2025 arrest, and has no pending criminal charges against him now," write The Bitter Southerner team.

Garrett Graff hopes this weekend's No Kings protests will someday be looked back upon as a turning point. Here's his story for his newsletter, Doomsday Scenario, in which he lists his reasons for hope: Trump's unpopularity, the fact that he can't last forever, and America's historical imperfection. "Today may be dark, but the story of America for 250 years is that — with hard work by good people — tomorrow there is hope it will be better," he writes.

The White House has admitted that Donald Trump's Truth Social post, in which he told Pam Bondi to pursue prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey, was intended to be a private message, according to @Independent. The message, which read: "They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW," may be at the heart of Comey's lawyers' motion to dismiss the case against him on the basis that it is a vindictive prosecution.

U.S. President Donald Trump wants to double the size of the ICE workforce, but there's a problem with that. More than one-third of new applicants has failed the agency's personal fitness test, which comprises 15 push-ups, 32 sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run in 14 minutes. An email from ICE headquarters to top officials described the new wave of candidates as "athletically allergic." Here's more from @TheAtlantic.

Local news matters, now more than ever. So a few weeks ago, we asked you for your thoughts on federating local papers in the USA — where you're located, and the specific publications you'd like to see. You responded, with ideas, suggestions, and an education on American geography. Now, we've federated 64 publications. Here's a blogpost with more details, plus a spreadsheet with a list of all the federated profiles, which include everyone from @AlaskaBeacon to @SunSentinel. If you spy a profile you like, search for it in the fediverse and you should see all its Magazines (topical feeds). Follow the profile to see everything in your feed, or just Magazines if you're only interested in, for example, South Florida Sports (@south-florida-sports-SunSentinel) or Texas Barbecue (@texas-bbq-TexasMonthly). If we've missed something or you have a suggestion for us, just let us know in the comments. Follow our @FlipboardMagazines account for regular updates on federated Magazines.
